Marozia Interview

For those that never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit  about the musical Project?
We are an extreme metal duo from the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil. We play something that can be labeled as old school black metal, but we don't intend to represent a genre neither to follow rules and stereotypes. Our music has a lot of influences, mostly of the pioneers of extreme metal, 90s black and death, and crust punk.

So far you have released 2 Eps, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other?
Our first EP is very raw and straightforward. We recorded it with some kind of urgency. In the second one we matured a little, and wrote more complex sounds, yet keeping the rawness. We’re always trying to do something better than our previous work (in our very personal standards, of course).

What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored with the music so far?

In terms of lyrics, and also ideology, we're not too akin to traditional black metal stuff. We deal with more personal and subjective themes, mainly life struggles.

Whats is the meaning and inspiration behind the the name Marozia?
It’s homage to a powerful and controversy woman in History. It’s an elegant name with an obscene meaning.

Currently there are just two members in the band, are you open to expanding de line-up or do you prefer to remain a duo?
We intend to remain a duo. The band works well this way.

Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
Labels, selling music and stuff like that aren't a major concern for us, it's not something we're looking for at the moment. We like to produce everything by ourselves, from recording to distribution.

On a worldwide level how has the feed been to your music by fans of black metal?
It’s a difficult question. We keep things going in a pretty underground level, making the divulgation mostly mouth-to-mouth. We have an interesting presence in the internet and social medias, so we have some listeners worldwide. But I’d say that Marozia is more like a local and underground stuff.

Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical project these days?
Yes. Luroz is always involved in gigs and experimental projects. I’m involved in a solo black metal project, Escvro, a trillwave/trip-hop project called Theurgy, and a Noise/Power Electronics one called Nihilistic Terror Cult. But our main focus is on Marozia.

When we can expect  a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
When we started the band, we planned to record three EPs, then release a full length. In the moment we’re focusing on composing and recording our third EP. Musically, each work reflects our present situation and influences, we don’t plan too much how we will sound, it’s something very spontaneous. Nowadays we’re being more influenced by crust punk than before, as you can notice in our single Carta aos Senhores.

What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Our metal influences are pretty evident on our songs and compositions. As we said, we enjoy a lot 80s and 90s extreme metal. Besides our metal influences, there are diverse bands and styles we like. Luroz is a huge fan of Pink Floyd, Tool, Isis and a long term fan of Cólera. I listen principally to metal, but I enjoy a lot of different musical genres, like classic rock, alternative/indie rock, old school sertanejo, rap and so on.

What are some of your non musical interests?
In common, we are football enthusiasts. Luroz is an avid movie watcher, enjoys literature (specially Dostoievski) and also plays a lot of survival horror games (he literally just plays that). I like to study subjects of my interest in my spare time, generally philosophy, politics and psychology.

Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Firstly, thanks for the support. If you like Marozia, check the KTCL YouTube channel, where we release our works and promote music of other artists from our underground scene.
Greetings from Brazil.
