Tsar Stangra are a band from Quebec, Canada that plays a mixture of pagan black metal and Bulgarian folk music and this is a review of their self released 2017 album "Celestial Forger" which will be released on May 26th.
Atmospheric soundscapes start off the album along with some melodic guitar leads and synths a few seconds later and you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording and after awhile grim yet high pitched black metal screams start to make their presence known.
Deep growls can also be heard briefly while the solos and leads are done in a very melodic fashion and when the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs a more raw feeling and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
Throughout the recording you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with riffs also using a great amount of melody and they also mix orchestra elements into the heavier sections of the songs and as the album progresses acoustic guitars and folk music influences are added onto the recording and female vocals are also used briefly while aggressive pagan singing is utilized on the closing track.
Tsar Stangra plays a musical style that takes an Eastern European influenced style of pagan black metal and mixes it with Bulgarian folk music to create something very different, the production sounds very powerful for being a self released recording while the lyrics are written in Bulgarian and cover the Paganism of that country along with themes of Slavic History and Pride.
In my opinion Tsar Stangra are a very great sounding mixture of pagan/black metal and Bulgarian folk music and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Obesvaneto Na Geroya" and "Opulchentsite Na Shipka". 8/5 out of 10.
