International band Sojourner have returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of an epic, atmospheric and melancholic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2021 ep "Perennial" which will be released in June by Napalm Records.
Tragic sounding piano's and flutes start off the ep before going into more of a heavier and melodic musical direction. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the solos and leads also add in a great amount of melody and when the music speeds up a lot of blast beats can also be heard.
Female vocals are also added into some parts of the recording while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. keyboards are also mixed in with the heavier sections of the music along with the tremolo picking also giving the tracks more of a raw feeling when they are utilized as well as some clean male vocals also being used briefly.
On this recording Sojourner takes their epic and atmospheric style of black metal into more of a melancholic direction. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover nature and fantasy themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Sojourner and if you are a fan of atmospheric, epic and melancholic black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Perennial". 8 out of 10.
