Saitma Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Saitma was put together in 2017. The vision was clear: otherworldly and early 90's influenced black metal. It wasn't a question of wanting, it was about an urge and need to do it.

2.So far you have released 3 demo's, musically how do they all differ from each other?

On Blizzard Tapes 2021 4 out of five songs were old ideas, from 1996 - 1998 and you can easily notice how the structures are quite compact. On Blizzard Tapes 2022 the current line up had found its form and composing tasks were shared equally. The band was into doomier vibes at that moment. The new Blizzard Tapes 2023 delivers faster and shorter material. The long play, whenever it shall come, is going to be a great maelstrom of all these elements.  

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Evil in human nature and evil in general. Total erosion of soul, one could say. 

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Saitma'?

It's a Sámi name for a mountain in northern Finland. A name that Google doesn't know. 

5.Can you tell us  a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the current demo cover?

Mount Saitma can be seen in the cover art of Blizzard Tapes 2023. A great place to be: no-one lives near it. I used to roam there in the 80's and 90's. 

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Saitma doesn't go out too often. Only three gigs done. That's why the live act is tight and focused. No talking, just full impact.  

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for 2024?

Absolutely. If not touring, certain live attacks are under planning. 

8.Currently the band is unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We are not dying to get a contract and are helplessly unwilling to send any banal blah blah letters around but we have gained some interest. We want to do this in our way. 

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

The little feedback Saitma has received has been positive. Usually thanking us for our non-polished sound.

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

The full length album is planned to be recorded during the spring 2024. Not sure when it will be out. Hopefully by the end of the year. The music will remain in old schoolish soundscapes. No synths nor clean vocals in sight - ever.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

The musicians of Saitma have a very wide musical background from crust and thrash to post-punk and noise. To name bands let's say Beherit is divine. Older and the new material as well. 

12.Does Satanism play any role in the music?

For a person outside the box it absolutely does. For us, satanism itself is a narrow term. But bluralistic enough!

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? 

Prostitutes go to heaven, it's their clients that go to hell.
