Oar/The Blood You Crave/Blighttown Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Oar  are  a  band  from  Australia  that  plays  post  black  metal  with  some  elements  of  doom  metal,  hardcore  and  blackgaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "The  Blood  You  Grave"  which  will  be  released  in  2022  by  Blighttown  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  elements  of  doom  metal  and  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.  Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  The  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  show  an  influence  of  hardcore  along  with  some  of the  solos  and  leads  also  adding  in  touches  of  blackgaze.  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  as  well  as  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  oppression,  sacrifice,  self-loathing,  separation  anxiety  and  corruption  of  the  self.

  In  my  opinion  Oar  are  a  very  great  sounding  post black  metal  band  with  elements  of  blackgaze,  doom  metal  and  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Blood  You  Crave"  and  "Souls  Lost  In  The  Front".  8  out  of  10.

Miazmaty/Apeirofobia/2021 EP Review

 

  Miazmaty  are  a  band  from  Poland  that  plays  post  black  metal  with  some  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  ep  "Apeirofobia".

  Acoustic  guitars  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  rock  style.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  gets  heavier  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard.

  Angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  elements  of  noise  and  dark  ambient  into  the  music  as  well  as  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  tracks  more  of  a  raw  feeling,  throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Miazmaty  plays  a  style  of  post  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  sounding  as  well  as  adding  in  elements  of  noise,  dark  ambient  and  post  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Polish  and  cover  the  different  stages  of  degeneration.  

  In  my  opinion  Miazmaty  are  a  very  great  sounding  post  black  metal  band  with  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  noise  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Miazmaty"  and  "Vastarien".  8  out  of  10.

Giurescu/Number Of Enemies/2021 Demo Review

 

  Giurescu  are  a  solo  project  from  Ukraine  that  plays  a  very  raw,  nihilistic,  depressive  and  suicidal  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2021  demo  "Number  Of  Enemies".

  Field  recordings  and  spoken  word  samples  start  off  the  demo  before  going  into  a  very  fast,  raw  and  lo-fi  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  while  atmospheric  elements  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  at  times  as  well  as  all  of  the  drum  beats  also  being  programmed.,  on  the  closing  track  the  music  also  stats  slowing  down  towards  the  end.  

  Giurescu  plays  a  style  of  black  metal t hat  is  very  raw,  lo-fi  depressive  and  lo-fi  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  nihilism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Giurescu  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  nihilistic,  depressive,  suicidal  and  lo-fi  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Enemy  Of  The  Highest  Order".  8  olut  of  10.

Velka/Purgatori Ignis Ludicium/Base Record Production/Necromance Records/2021 CD Review

 

  Velka  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  aggressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Purgatori  Ignis  Ludicium"  which  will  be  released  on  November  30th  as  a  joint  effort  between  Base  Record  Production  and  Necromance  Records.

  Nature  sounds  and  field  recordings  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  deep  death  metal  growls  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments  as  well  as  some  of  the  riffing  also  showing  an  influence  of  mid  90's  Swedish  style  as  well  as  the  guitar  leads  going  into  more  of  a  melodic  direction  when  they  are  utilized,  whispers  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  a  couple  of  songs  also  introduces  keyboards  and  clean  playing  onto  the  album.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  death,  pain,  chaos  and  metaphysical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Velka  are  a  very  great  sounding  aggressive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Eternal  Hate  Awakens"  and  "Lake  Of  Forgetfulness".  8/2  out  of  10.

  Cruciatus  Infernalis  are  a  solo  project  from  Austria  that  plays  a  raw  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  with  some  symphonic  and  dungeon  synth  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  ep  "Untot"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Kult  und  Kaos  Productions.

  Spoken  word  samples  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  and  lo-fi  musical  direction.  Symphonic  elements  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Touches  of  dungeon  synth  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  some  melodies  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  programmed  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  death  metal  elements.  A  lot  of  the songs  are  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  90's  era.  The  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  lo-fi  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  hell,  death  and  torture  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Cruciatus  Infernalis  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  symphonic  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  with  elements  of  dungeon  synth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Qualenmeer"  "Untoten"  AND  "Vernictung".  8  OUT  OF  10.

Ungoliantha/The Howl In The Waste/Drakkar Productions/2021 EP Review

 

  Ukraine's  Ungoliantha  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  old  school  style  of  black  metal  with  soem  symphonic  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "The  Howl  in  The  Waste"  which  was  released  by  Drakkar  Productions.

  A  very  heavy  and  symphonic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  which  also  get  very  deep  and  angry  sounding  at  times.  When the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  they  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  Lord  Belial's  "Hymn  Of  The  Ancient  Spirit  Of  The  Forest".

  On  this  recording  Ungoliantha  brings  in  more  of  an  old  school  and  symphonic  style  that  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  80's.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  mysticism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ungoliantha and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  and  symphonic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Old  Blind  Man"  and  "Ghost Wanderer".  8  out  of  10.

  Somnolent  are  a  duo  from  the  United  States  that  plays  a  mixture  of  industrial,  ritual,  dark  ambient,  harsh noise, black and death metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "The  Infernal  Expanse"  which  will  be  released  in  December  as  a  joint  effort  between  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories  and  Cyclic  Law.

  Dark  ambient  style  synths  and  drones  start  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Industrial  style  beats  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  ritualistic  moments  and  when  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  direction  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Vocals are  a  mixture  of  grim  black  metal  screams  and  cavernous  yet  bestial  death  metal  growls  while  dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  The  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  harsh  noises  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording,  elements  of  war  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  parts  of  the  music  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  song. 

  Somnolent  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  industrial,  ritual,  dark ambient,  harsh  noise  and  bestial  black/death  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  lo-fi  while  the  lyrics  cover  apocalyptic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Somnolent  are  a  very  great  sounding  ritualistic  mixture  of  industrial,  dark  ambient,  harsh  noise,  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of t hose  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "i"  AND  "III".  8  out  of  10.
