Protestant are a band from Wisconsin that plays a mixture of raw black metal, crust and hardcore punk and this is a review of their 2014 album "In Thy Name" which was released as a joint effort between Halo Of Flies and Throutruiner.
A very fast and raw black metal sound starts off the album along with some blast beats and a few seconds later angry screams are added into the music and you can also hear some melody in their guitar riffing, after awhile the band starts bringing in a mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
On the later tracks the band starts mixing in elements of crust and hardcore punk with their raw and melodic approach to black metal in both the riffing and vocals and as the album progresses you can hear elements of sludge and doom metal in certain sections of the recording while the music mainly focuses more on a black metal direction and only brings in a small amount of solos and leads on one of the tracks as well as keeping mostly everything heavy from beginning to end of the recording while there is a brief use of atmospheric sounds on one of the tracks.
Protestant goes back to a raw and melodic style of 90's black metal and mixes in a bit of their crust and hardcore punk music style in to update this musical genre for the modern day, the production sounds very dark, raw and old school while the lyrics cover dark and negative themes.
In my opinion Protestant are a very great sounding mixture of raw and melodic black metal, crust and hardcore punk and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Vengeance" "Never Forget" "Blood" and "Delusion". 8 out of 10.
