1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We are a black metal band formed in 2001 by Tanatos and Animus Atra. The idea since the beginning was to perform the music in its rawest aspect. Direct riffs, fast drums and lyrics by total disregard to Christianity. It's what we did 13 years ago and what we still do today!
2.Recently you had released a re-recorded version of your 2004 demo, what was the decision behind re-recording these songs and also how does the newer version differ from the original one that was released 10 years ago?
We needed to close a cycle. The first recording of "The Age of Darkness" in 2004 was made with a different lineup, although the songs were made by the original lineup. In the current version, in 2014, there was a musical maturity of all of us and to get back to where we left, we decided to record it and also add two songs of the first demo, "Disciple of Evil" and "Oh My Lord ..." .
3.The band was broken up for a few years, what was the cause of the split and also the decision to reform?
After Tanatos leave the band in 2004 for personal reasons, we changed the lineup to try to keep the band alive. But then, in 2005, I, Animus Atra, was invited to join the brazilian Death/Black Metal band CARPATUS and keep both bands active becomes impossible. So we decided to split up.
Through these years a lot of people kept always asking us about the band, so in 2013 Tanatos and I decided to bring the band to life again.
4.The lyrics cover some satanic, occult and anti christian themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?
We live in Brazil, an extremely catholic country. We see all the rottenness behind this religion in many ways in our society. There is no way to condone it. In occultism and Satanism, we found our way to expose this hatred with our music.
5.The band was originally known as Nekros, what was the decision behind the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Creptum'?
We started as Nekros because our focus was a name that expresses the theme of our lyrics. However, we enter into conflict with other bands that used the same name. So, we try to keep the latin and came to "creperum", which means "darkness", and from there we adapted the term to Creptum, but the meaning is the same.
6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
It´s hard to say. We did some real good shows with some real awesome bands, so is hard to choose one or two.
About the performance, I could say it’s intense... Our songs are fast and raw, especially live... We do not use corpse paint, or spikes and don´t have nothing special visually speaking. We try to make just about the music.
7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
We are preparing for some shows in Brazil. We already have early conversations with some producers and the return to the stage will happen soon. We also have the idea to do a mini-tour through some European countries in 2015/16, but this are still only plans.
8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
Yes. The EP was released totally independent, but we know the difficulties of making our sound reach other parts of the world and a label would help a lot. I hope that happens soon.
9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
We have received messages from people all over the world congratulating us on the sound. From Indonesia to the United States. But from Europe comes most of the messages from outside Brazil.
We´re getting a great feedback since we released the EP, which means a lot for us.
10.Are any of the band members involved with any other musical projects these days?
Deimous Nefus has a Project called simply "Nefus".
11.When can we expect new material and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
We are already working on a totally new material for the beginning of 2015. Some musical changes are natural and will happen, it is part of evolution, but we are focused on keeping the essence of the raw and harsh sound, which has become a characteristic of Creptum in these 13 years.
12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Our influence comes basically from Black Metal and Thrash Metal Bands. Marduk, Dark Funeral, Desaster, Kreator, Destruction, Bathory, Taake, Sarcófago. The list could go on forever.
Speaking for myself, Tanatos, I´m listening a lot of Black Metal lately. More specifically, some bands stand out like Watain, Inferno (CZ), Belphegor, MGLA, Lord Belial, Immortal and Behemoth. Out of the style I listen to things like delta blues, Robert Johnson and Charley Patton.
13.What are some of your non musical interests?
Outside of music, we have interests in art and literature, such as HP Lovecraft, Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Nietzsche, Edward Munch, Murnau, Fritz Lang, HR Giger (beyond Alien) ... These influences were gradually becoming part of what we consider the personality of Creptum.
14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Fist of all we want to thank you and Occult Black Metal Zine for the support. And for the people that doesn´t know us yet, go check our songs. We try to be really true with our music and style.
