Lilyum are a band from Italy that plays a very raw and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Altar Of Fear" which was released by Vacula Productions.
Dark soundscapes start off the album before going into a very fast and raw direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams along with the music also being very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave style.
Most of the tracks are very long and epic in length while the solos and leads are done in a very dark and melodic fashion along with the songs also bringing in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and on some tracks the music incorporates atmospheric elements, as the album progresses clean singing and synths are added into some of the songs and the riffs also bring in a decent amount of melody and when spoken word parts are used briefly they give the music more of a ritualistic feeling.
Lilyum plays a style of black metal that is very raw and old school in the 90's Nordic second wave tradition, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover death, misanthropy, darkness and insanity themes.
In my opinion Lilyum are a very great sounding raw old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Watchers Departure" and "Stain Of Salvation". 8 out of 10.
