Deviator are a band from Ukraine that has been featured before in this zine and plays a pagan form of black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Might Ov Ancient" which was released by Vacula Productions.
A very dark, raw and heavy guitar sound starts off the album along with some grim black metal screams a few seconds later along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic fashion and when keyboards are utilized they give the songs more of an epic feeling along with a couple of the tracks being very long and epic in length.
A lot of the slower riffing brings in elements of doom metal while elements of ambient are also utilized at times along with a small amount of acoustic guitars and the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the music a more raw feeling which is only used briefly on a couple of tracks with the main focus being more on a slow or mid tempo style and there is also an ambient style intro.
On this recording Deviator focuses more on an ambient influenced style of black metal while still maintaining a very dark, raw and grim edge, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Heathenism, Nordic Mythology, Dark Side Of Nature and Individualism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Deviator and if you are a fan of ambient influenced pagan black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Cold Of Eternal Winter In The Heart" and "Thy Immortal Majesty". 8 out of 10.
