Theurgia are a band with members from Columbia and Venezuela that has been featured before in this zine and plays a very dark and modern form of black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Transformation" which will be released in October as a joint effort by Throats Productions, Wrship Tapes and Esfinge De La Calavera.
Water sounds and atmospheric soundscapes start off the album while clean playing is added onto the recording after the intro and also takes the music into more of a heavier musical direction along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them as well as a great portion of the tracks being very long and epic in length.
Vocals bring in a mixture of both deep and high pitched black metal screams while the faster sections of the songs bring in a great amount of blast beats along with the tremolo picking giving the songs a more raw feeling and when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very modern, melodic and atmospheric style.
Throughout the recording you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast pared while the riffs also bring in a decent amount of melody and ritualistic chants are also used briefly before returning back to a heavier direction and clean playing also returns on one of the later tracks and melodic vocals are also used briefly.
On this recording Theurgia plays a style of black metal that is very modern and atmospheric while also mixing in the rawness of the second wave era, the production sounds very powerful while the lyrics have a concept to them and cover nihilism and philosophical themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Theurgia and if you are a fan of modern black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Trnsformation (Descend Into The Night Of Hiperboros)" and "Procesio VI - Mea Spiritus In Opium". 8 out of 10.
