Germany's Ctulu have returned with a new recording which continues the H.P Lovecraft inspired fast, raw and melodic black metal style of previous releases and this is a review of their 2017 ep "Cultis In Tenebris" which will be released in October by Static Tension Recordings.
Militant style drum beats start off the ep along with some heavy riffing a few seconds later which also uses a great amount of melody while the faster sections of the songs also bring in a decent amount of blast beats and when vocals are brought onto t he recording they bring in a mixture of growls and black metal screams.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the faster riffs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking, elements of thrash and death metal are also utilized at times and there is also a brief use of clean vocals and a couple of tracks also adds in a small amount of clean guitars.
Ctulu creates another recording that remains true to the raw and melodic style of black metal from previous releases while also progressing with their style, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics are based upon the writings of H.P Lovecraft.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ctulu and if you are a fan of raw and melodic black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ctulu Fhtagn" and "Mare Belli". 8 out of 10.
