Alcyone are a band from Rhode Island that plays a very progressive form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2017 album which was re-issued in 2017 by Anthrazit Records.
A very fast and raw Cascadian influenced sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals a re mostly high pitched screams along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic and progressive style as well as bringing death metal growls in at times.
All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them while the riffs also mix in progressive elements at times along with a great amount of melody and melodic vocals can also be heard in certain sections of the recording as well as most of the tracks being very long and epic in length.
Throughout the recording you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and as the album progresses acoustic guitars are also brought onto some of the tracks and also add in a touch of folk music while some post rock elements are also added into some of the leads along with one song also adding in a brie f use of spoken word parts and pianos and stringed instruments are added onto the closing song
Alycone plays a style of black metal that is very modern and progressive sounding while also mixing in elements of death metal to create something very different, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and emotional themes.
In my opinion Alcycone are a very great sounding progressive black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Shards Embedded In Forgotten Wounds" and "Eighteenth Breath". 8 out of 10.
