Ascension are a band from Germany that plays an occult form of black metal and this is a review of their 2018 album "Under Ether" which will be released in March by W.T.C Productions.
Clean playing starts off the album along with some melodic guitar leads a few seconds later which also leads to a heavier direction along with some grim yet high pitched black metal screams and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard as well as some melodic riffing.
When tremolo picking is utilized it gives the songs a more raw feeling while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with a couple of tracks also bringing in a small amount of spoken word parts and whispers as well as the riffs also bringing in a decent amount of melody and some of the tracks are very long and epic in length, clean playing also returns on some of the later songs as the album progresses.
Ascension plays a style of occult black metal that is very modern and aggressive sounding, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover death, fire, magick and occultism themes.
In my opinion Ascension are a very great sounding occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ever Staring Eyes" "Pulsating Nought" and "Stars To Dust". 8 out of 10.
