Porta Nigra are a band from Germany that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays an avant garde form of black metal with elements of doom, death and thrash metal and this is a review of their 2023 album "Weltende" which will be released in July by Soulseller Records.
Clean playing starts off the album while also introducing spoken word parts into the music before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams and all of the instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while a couple of tracks are also very long and epic in length. Synths can also be heard on a couple of tracks along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style and the riffing also shows some influences' of death and thrash metal.
At times the music also gets very avant garde sounding along with the riffs also adding in a great amount of melody as well as the slower sections of the songs also bringing in touches of doom metal , clear singing is also added in certain sections of the recording and on some of the other tracks the vocals experiment with other styles of extreme metal. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in German and cover The Great War and shows some inspirations from the writings of Georg Heym, Jakob von Hoddis, George Trakl and Gottfried Benn.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Pota Nigra and if you are a fan of avant garde black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Es ist krieg" "Verlorene Paradiese" "Wltende" and "Hora Mortis". 8 out of 10.
