Abhorrency Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Sexslayer: We're a black/death metal band from Sacramento California. I think a bunch of reviewers described us best as "war metal with riffs you can actually hear".

2.So far you have released a demo, full length and split, musically how do they all differ form each other?

Upheavor: Demo is purposely done to be as raw as possible. The song on the split is a physical copy exclusive only. It will be included on the upcoming 2nd album.

Sexslayer: Yeah, the demo was just a quick raw recording we self-released in February 2020 cuz we were like "we gotta release something and play our debut show asap before a pandemic hits and everything shuts down". Then after that we had all the time in the world to properly record a studio album.

3.Some of your lyrics cover satanic themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the black arts?

Upheavor: NON SERVIAM.

4.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Upheavor: Iconoclasm, necromancy, perversion etc.

Sexslayer: I don't even remember what our lyrics are, he just growls like a bear into the mic and I don't even know what he's saying...

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name ‘Abhorrency’?

Sexslayer: We wanted an abhorrent sounding name that wasn't already taken.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the full length cover?

Upheavor: We wanted it to be as revolting and evil as possible. Silvia captured what we were going for.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Upheavor: Dead congregation in Oakland, Abigail in L.A., and Death Under the Bridge in Seattle are the immediate ones that come to my head.

Sexslayer: Also that one local Sac show where you threatened the crowd saying "I can literally beat every single one of you up". And yeah, that show opening for Abigail in SoCal for sure was the best one, L.A. rules and my fellow the Satanic Hispanics down there are absolute maniaks!

Upheavor: Stage performance is as aggressive as possible, we go for all killer no filler. We are loud and intense, etc.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Upheavor: Just the Abysmal lord gig in Portland and Demoncy gig in L.A. this October. And next year the death fest in Mexico. We could say we are interested in an east coast run soon maybe.

9.Recently you were a part of a split, can you tell us a little bit more about the bands you shared this recording with?

Sexslayer: Declension and Horns Against Heaven are newer bands featuring close friends we have played in other bands with. They each had a killer new song recorded so I figured we can record a new song too and help promote each other via a multi-band split. We wanted a 4th band to round it out and we knew some other friends who started a new band called Deiphage so we asked if they had any finished songs they could record to contribute. They said yes but needed a little time to finish writing and then went on to record a sick 20 minute EP and put aside an exclusive extra song for our split!

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of war and bestial black/death metal?

Sexslayer: Pretty good. Like I said at the beginning of the interview lots of good reviews praising how its war metal with discernible riffs. But most importantly we have been given opportunities to share the stage with bands we respect and have been listening to for years. We haven't officially made it yet though until we get to play with Blasphemy.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Upheavor: Faster and more extreme.

Sexslayer: God dammit that means I gotta practice more.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Upheavor: Some of our main influences are Archgoat, Dead Congregation, Black Witchery, Diocletian, Incantation, Profanatica, Immolation and Blasphemy.

Sexslayer: I've picked up over 50 new releases so far this year and some really good ones I've been listening to a lot lately are Black Ejaculate, Lucifixion, Embodied Torment, Deiphage, Disimperium, Ascended Dead, Spirit Possession, Torture Rack, Porphyrion, Serotonin Leakage, Deathgrave, Hate Manifesto, Paimon Gate, Invultation, Ruin and Minenwerfer.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Sexslayer: I'm always thinking about that picture of Brock Lesnar with Will Rahmer.
