Infernation Interview

1. For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Purgatory №7: Infernation is a musical project that performs in the genre of War Metal/Bestial Black Metal. We are inspired by the chaotic and violent nature of war, and we express our feelings and thoughts through our music. Our sound is raw, aggressive, and fast, with distorted guitars, blast beats, and harsh vocals. We aim to create a sonic assault that reflects the horrors and atrocities of war.

2. You have your first full length coming out during the beginning of October, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

Abysswalker: As it is already said, Infernation creates raw, brutal and straightforward War Metal soundscapes. The album «Dark Path of Renunciation» adheres to the basics of the genre while slightly reconsidering it in its own way. The tracks on the album are quite versatile – gloomy and meditative “Introduction to Destruction” is roughly interrupted by the fast and uncompromised “Manifesto of Hatred”, followed by whirlwind “Dark Pontiff”, leading to the more mid-tempo blasphemous act “Angelraping”, then comes the climactic “Devourer of Gods”, nextly – furious “Diprosopus”, energetic “Dungeon” and finally – slow yet dark and mesmerizing hymn “Undead Habitation”.

 3. Lyrically you also taking inspiration from Occultism and Medieval History, which aspects of these topics do you bring into your songwriting?

Purgatory №7: Our lyrics are inspired by occultism and the issues of sociality. We bring into our songwriting the themes of mysticism, heresy, and orthodox themes. We use these topics to express our direct hatred towards social issues and its degradation. We denounce the hypocrisy, corruption, and oppression of the modern world, and we seek to awaken the ancient spirit of rebellion and resistance.

4. You also mentioned the writings of H.P Lovecraft, old horror movies and dark fantasy franchises, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these fields?

Abysswalker: As to H.P Lovecraft – he is the true progenitor and undisputed master of horrors. He creates the unique atmosphere of all-encompassing horror in his works, once you feel it – it remains in your heart for aeons. That experience definitely influenced our creative vision, as well as the dark aesthetics of the artworks by H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński. We also take our inspiration from the old-school horror movies (such as “The Thing”, “Begotten”, “Shining”, so on) and even the fictional universes of dark fantasy franchises as “Malazan Book of the Fallen” book series by Steven Erickson, “Van Helsing” and “The Crow” films, “Dark Souls” videogames.

 5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Infernation'?

Purgatory №7: It does not have any specific meaning, just the combination of the words ‘Inferno’ and ‘nation’. The only remark to add is that it happened to sound quite similar to such brutal acts as Proclamation, Incantation, Invultation, Ritual Laceration, Malefic Levitation, Sadistik Exekution, etc. This fact can be considered as our way to pay respect to these unholy masters of the genre.

6. Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Abysswalker: Album cover artwork has been designed by Purgatory №7. Original piece of art used for the cover is called “The Fall of the Rebel Angels”, it was created by the Baroque epoch engraver Lucas Vorsterman I (1595- 1675). The biblical event portrayed on this engraving seems to be stunningly fitting to the ideas behind our album and its artistic style.

 7. Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

Purgatory №7: We don't think that we need to develop this project for live performances. With our duet, we cope with imagining our ideas into music that is close to us. We prefer to focus on the creative process and the quality of our recordings. We do not seek fame or wide recognition, but rather the satisfaction of expressing ourselves through our art.

8. The new album is coming out on 'Nekrolust Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Abysswalker: Nekrolust Records is the Extreme Underground Metal Label from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The label's roster already includes such powerful blasphemous acts as Thy Rites, Sanctiphagous, Cultus Funeris, Deiphage, Tetanus, Cabra Infenal, Goatoimpurity and many others. The label is going to distribute our music to the main streaming platforms and manufacture the jewel case CDs in the general circulation of 300 items. We genuinely hope that in cooperation with Nekrolust Records our creative attainment will reach the minds and souls of many thirsty to darkness Metal admirers worldwide.

 9. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of War Metal?

Purgatory №7: Some of our colleagues in local scene liked it. I think we hit the genre’s rules and found our style. We’ve already gained quite a lot of positive feedback on the upcoming full-length album and we also think that this is a complex work.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Abysswalker: I think, we will continue heading our chosen path of creating dark, brutal and relentlessly blasphemous War Metal music. We’ve already got some ideas for the future releases and it is quite possible that you’ll see a multifaceted conceptual album/EP by our project someday. We’re also planning to create some even faster stuff further on, so we need to keep on mastering our instruments skills and songwriting to nail that goal.

 11. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Purgatory №7: We have been influenced by bands like Blasphemy, Conqueror, Revenge, Invultation, Archgoat. By the way, we love different music genres. Abysswalker digs into Black Metal more, Purgatory №7 mainly loves Death Metal. So, we combine the tunes from these two genres to preserve the gloom of one and emphasize the rhythm and punch of the other.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Abysswalker: We are a War Metal band from the country that is in the state of war right now! The war actions significantly affected almost all the aspects of our lives. The prominent emotions we feel due to these circumstances are the fury, hatred and the thirst for righteous revenge to the russian invaders and illicit terrorists. Everyone can help restoring the justice and saving as many lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians as possible. The preferable ways to do that are to volunteer at the humanitarian aid hub in your countries or to donate to the verified charitable foundations. If anyone struggles to choose one, we recommend considering “Steel Wings” Foundation, “Come Back Alive” or “On Guard” Charitable Organization. Real war sucks, yet together we can do our best to end it sooner and to help those in need overcome the woes unknown even to the infernal forces, praised in our odes
