Tezcatlipoca are a band from Mexico that plays a pagan form of black metal with elements of Aztec folk music and this is a review of their 2018 album "Tlayohualtlapelani" which will be released in October by Iron Bonehead Productions.
Rain and thunder sounds start off the album before going into a heavier direction which also introduces grim black metal screams onto the recording while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them along with some folk instruments also being added into certain sections of the songs.
When tremolo picking and blast beats are utilized they give the music more of a raw feeling while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the music also sounding very shamanistic and ritualistic at times as well as some spoken word parts also being used briefly, melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing and they close the album with an isntruemntal.
Tezcatlipoca plays a style of black metal that is very raw while the elements of Aztec folk music gives the songs more originality, the production sounds very powerful while the lyrics Aztec Occultism, Mythology and Sorcery themes.
In my opinion Tezcatlipoca are a very great sounding mixture of Aztec folk music and pagan/black metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Notlacahcahualiz Ica Yetztli, Cip" "Chichimeca, Yaotecatl Ayamictlan" and "Tlacatl Tlein In Mimiqueh Icah Tl". 8/5 out of 10.
