Calyx are a band from Spain that plays a very old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Vientos Arcaicos" which will be released in May by Iron Bonehead Productions.
An classical guitar intro starts off the album before going into a heavier musical direction while the faster sections of the songs also bring in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. Vocals are mostly grim black metal screams and the riffs also add in a great amount of melody.
A lot of the music also has its roots in t he mid 80's and 90's while still maintaining a very modern atmosphere. Most of the tracks are very long and epic in length. Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them.
A touch of first wave black metal and thrash can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing while growls can also be heard in certain sections of the recording. When guitar solos and leads are utilized true remain very true to an old school style of extreme metal as well as having their melodic moments and as the album progresses a brief use of Spanish guitars can also be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Spanish and cover the Middle Ages, Native Legends Of The Iberian Peninsula, castles, ruins, Aragonese Pyrenees, and decrepitude.
In my opinion Calyx are a very great sounding old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "La venganza de las brujas" "Bajo el firmamento cocturno" and "Loarre". 8/5 out of 10.

I agree with the reviewer that if you like 1st wave black metal or thrash this album will most definitely get your fist pumping and head banging!! Very good debut full length!! I have been blasting this album since I got it. It sounds great and the production is clean enough but not so much that it sounds over produced at all! The riffs and drum work are also very good and the vocal style is excellent!! I'm very impressed with this release and I think anyone who likes black metal or just heavy music in general who appreciate this album and really enjoy it!!
