Canis Dirus are a duo from Minnesota that plays a mixture of atmospheric black metal and neo folk and this is a review of their album "Independence To The Beast" which will be released in 2020 by Bindrune Recordings.
Nature sounds start off the album before adding in some dark and melodic guitar leads while the faster sections of the songs also bring in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling along with the vocals being mostly high pitched black metal screams.
The riffs also add in a great amount of melody along with a great portion of the tracks being very long and epic in length. Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Clean playing and synths are also added into certain sections of the recording as well as some spoken word parts also being used briefly. When acoustic guitars are utilized they also add in elements of neo folk onto the album along with some clean vocals also being utilized at times, touches of post metal and shoegaze can also be heard in some parts of the recording. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover paganism and the life, death, rebirth cycle.
In my opinion Canis Dirus are a very great sounding mixture of atmospheric black metal and neo-folk and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this duo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "We Are The Ancient Ones" and "To Cast The Runes". 8 out of 10.
