Thokk are a band from Virginia that played a very dark and cryptic form of black metal on this recording with elements of dungeon synth and this is a review of their 1995 demo "A Trance For The Ever-Toiling Witch" which was re-issued in 2021 by Sinistari Records.
A dark synth sound with field recordings in the background start off the demo before going into a very fast and raw direction along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals a re mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams while the musical style shows a heavy influence of the Nordic style that was very common in that time era.
Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. some of the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with one song also adding in a brief use of spoken word parts and evil laughter.
Clear chants can also be heard briefly along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style as well as one song also introducing percussion onto the recording and some songs also go into more of a ritualistic and dungeon direction which also adds in some elements of noise but keeping the main focus on black metal. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Lycanthropy, Occultism, Anti Christianity, Vampirism, Witchcraft, Necromancy and Simon's version of the Necronomicon.
In my opinion Thokk are a very great sounding dark and cryptic black metal band with elements of dungeon synth and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Wolf-Hymn" "The Witch-Tower of Vshanaad" and "Haunted By Saturnian Phantoms (Abducted in The Cosmic Borg)". 8.5 out of 10.
