Winternaht are a solo project from Germany that has had music reviewed in this zine and plays an archaic form of pagan black metal and this is a review of his 2023 album "Anþjaz" which was released by Schierling Klangkunst.
Water sounds start off the album along with some folk music elements and clear pagan vocals a few seconds later. Acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly while the whispers also give the music more of a ritualistic feeling when t hey are utilized before going into more of a heavier and melodic musical direction.
High pitched black metal screams are also a very huge part of the recording while the keyboards also give the album more an atmospheric and epic feeling while they are utilized. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the album more of a raw feeling.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style when they are utilized. Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length as well as all of the musical instruments on the album also having a very powerful sound to them, growls can also be heard at times and one song is also an instrumental. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in German and cover Paganism, History,, Nature, Misanthropy and anti-theism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Winternaht and if you are a fan of pagan black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Anþjaz" "Haimaerþa" and "Staingrab in þe Morganbrâdam". 8 out of 10.
