Formless Devotion are a band from South Africa that plays an occult form of black metal and this is a review of their 2016 mini album "Sparks Of Separation" which was released by Cyclopean Eye Productions.
A very dark and raw sound starts off the album along with some deep growls and progressive structures and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard which gives the music more of a raw feeling along with some melodic guitar leads and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
At time s the music can get very atmospheric and ritualistic along with a couple of the tracks being interludes and the music also has a very technical approach to black metal with the way the musical instruments are very performed and you can also hear melodies being added into some of the riffs along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and as the album progresses a brief use of acoustic guitars and synths can be heard along with a small amount of clean playing while the main focus remains more on a heavier sound.
Formless Devotion plays a style of occult black metal that is very dark, modern and ritualistic while also having a vocal approach that is closer to death metal, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Draconian Mysteries and Left Hand Path themes.
In my opinion Formless Devotion are a very great sounding occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this mini album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Aeonik Devotion" and "Sparks Of Separation". 8 out of 10.
