Balfor are a band from Ukraine that has been featured before in this zine and plays a barbaric form of black metal and this is a review of their album "Black Serpent Rising" which will be released in 2017 by Drakkar Productions.
A very heavy yet atmospheric sound starts off the album and synths can also be heard at times and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard while the solos and leads also use a great amount of melody and you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording.
Vocals are mostly grim black metal screams and clean playing can also be heard at times and some of the riffing brings in elements of melodic death metal while melodic singing can also be heard in some of the songs and there is also a brief use of acoustic guitars, female vocals and folk instruments on one of the tracks and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some of the faster riffing also using a small amount of tremolo picking and as the album progresses spoken word parts and chants can be heard in certain sections of the recording.
Balfor creates another recording that remains true to the atmospheric and melodic side of black metal from their previous release, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover barbarians, mythology, fantasy and historical themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Balfor and if you are a fan of melodic and atmospheric black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Serpents Of The Black Sun" "Among The Fallen One's" and "Under A Vulture's Spell". 8 out of 10.
