Hemlokk are a solo project from the United Kingdom that plays a mixture of atmospheric pagan black metal and neo-folk and this is a review of her 2024 album "In The Shade of Irminsul" which will b e released in may by Faidh Productions.
Nature sounds start off the album along with some acoustic guitars a few seconds later which also beings in elements of neo-folk. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them and folk instruments are also added on a few tracks.
A couple of the songs is also an instrumental while the recording also gets more heavier and melodic on the 3rd song. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the album more of a raw feeling along with the album also having its atmospheric moments, clean singing and synths can also be heard briefly as well as the heavier tracks also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Hemlokk plays a musical style that takes an atmospheric form of pagan black metal and mixes it with neo-folk to create a sound of her own. The production sounds very dark and r aw while the lyrics cover Anglo Saxon Heathenry.
In my opinion Hemlokk are a very great sounding atmospheric mixture of pagan black metal and neo-folk and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Where Wild Rabbits Run" and "Over The River Bank". 8 out of 10.
