Erstarren are a band from Germany that plays a very atmospheric and hypnotic form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2024 ep "...Zu Asche".
Atmospheric sounding synths start off the ep and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the music briefly. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the faster sections of the tracks also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling.
The songs also show influences of both the old school and modern era's of the genre while also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Clean playing can also be heard briefly along with some of the guitar riffing also adding in small amount of melody.
Erstarren plays a style of black metal that is very atmospheric and traditional sounding. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics are written in German and cover dark themes.
In my opinion Erstareren are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "in Asche gelegt". 8 out of 10.
