Lamentations Of The Ashen are a 1 man band originally from New Mexico but now resides in Ohio that plays an atmospheric form of black metal with some elements of doom metal and this is a review of his 2015 album "Libertine Cyst" which will be released in March as a joint effort between Fragile Branch and Sylvan Screams Analog.
A very dark, depressive and distorted sound starts off the album and after awhile the music starts adding in melodic post black metal style guitar leads while the guitar rhythms bring in elements of doom and sludge metal which they also mix in with high pitched screams that also takes the music into more of a fast and raw black metal direction that also utilizes a great amount of blast beats.
All 4 of the tracks are very long and epic in length and the songs also bring in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while some of the sections also bring in a brief use of spoken word parts and when synths are utilized they bring in more of an atmospheric and ambient feeling to the recording.
Throughout the recording the music mixes in doom with black metal and each track has a different sound while you can still easily tell that it is the same artist on all of them along with the second track bringing in elements of funeral and 90's doom/death and some of t he songs also bring in a good mixture of both clean and heavy parts and as the album progresses a brief use of drones and acoustic guitars are added onto the album along with a few seconds of clear vocals which also gives the music more of a progressive feeling.
Lamentations Of The Ashen creates 4 epic tracks that bring in a very diverse yet atmospheric black metal album that is mixes in a decent amount of doom metal elements along with a good dose of melody and a touch of progressive traces to create a very original sounding album, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Sorrow, Depression and Hatred.
In my opinion Lamentations Of the Ashen are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Profane Illvmination" and "Dissentient Cyclic Echelons". 8 out of 10.
