Forgotten Tomb are a band from Italy that has bee n featured before in this zine and are also very well known in depressive black metal circles and on this album they go for more of a modern black metal sound instead of the gothic black/doom style that they have established on the last few recordings and this is a review of their 2015 album "Hurt Yourself And the Ones You Love" which was released by Agonia Records.
A very distorted sound starts off the album along with some grim black metal screams and a few seconds alter the music goes into a very fast and raw musical direction as well as utilizing a great amount of blast beats and you can also hear melodies coming out of the riffs and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
A good portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and when solos and leads are utilized they are very dark and melodic and spoken word samples can be heard in certain sections of the recording and a lot of the songs go for more of a modern style of black metal.
Element s of groove can be heard in some of the riffs and as the album progresses some of the songs bring in a small amount of clean playing and some of the slower riffs also bring in a touch of doom while the band focuses more on a blackened style this time around while some of the songs also bring in a black'n'roll vibe and the whole album is very diverse and they close the album with an instrumental track.
Forgotten Tomb changes their musical style on this album going into more of a heavy and modern black metal direction and while it still is not on par with their earlier depressive albums the music is more straight forward and less experimental than previous recordings, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover depression, Suicide, negativity, solitude and nihilism.
In my opinion this is a great return to form album from Forgotten Tomb and if you are a fan of this band, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Soulless Upheaval" "Hurt Yourself And The Ones You Love" and "Swallow The Void". 8 out of 10.
