Arstidir Lifsons are a band with members from both Germany and Iceland that plays a pagan form of black metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "Adolfodr ok munka drottin" which was released by Van Records.
Nature sounds and folk instruments start off the album along with some melodic viking vocals and chants a few seconds later and after awhile acoustic guitars can be heard in certain sections of the recording and once the music gets heavy melodies and grim black metal screams become a huge part of the songs on the recording.
Spoken word parts can be heard in some parts of the songs and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the faster sections displaying more of a raw black metal sound and some of the songs also bring acoustic guitars into certain sections of the recording.
You can hear the influence of classical music quite a bit on all of the tracks and when solos and leads are utilized they are very dark and melodic sounding and in the heavier sections of the music you can hear a great amount of Nordic black metal elements and some of the more atmospheric parts bring in a trace of ambient music.
Arstidir Lifons plays a style of pagan/black metal that is very heavily rooted in the Nordic tradition but also adds in more folk and ambient music elements along with some spoken word narrative's that gives the music more of an epic and original feeling, the production sound s very powerful while the lyrics are written in Old Norse Icelandic and cover Old Nose Literature, History and Paganism.
In my opinion Arstidr Lifons are a very great sounding epic pagan/black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical direction, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Kastar Heljar Brenna Fjarri Ofan Onundardarfirdinu" "Ulfs Vedrit Er to CMXCIX" "Nordsaeta Gaetis, Herfingja Ormsins Langa" and "Sem Lengsk Vanar Lopts Ljosgimu HVarfs". 8 out of 10.
