Spain's Balmog has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of a violent style of black metal with some psychedelic and progressive rock touches and this is a review of their 2023 ep "Covenants of Salt" which will be released in may by War Anthem Records.
Dark sounding synths start off the ep before going into more of a heavier and melodic direction while the onyl track that is present on the recording is over 16 minutes in length. When guitar solos are utilized they also bring in a great amount of melody and clean singing can also be heard at times.
At times the music also gets very progressive sounding while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. Vocals are mostly grim yet angry sounding black metal screams along with some keyboards also being added into some parts of the track along with the faster sections of the song also adding in a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling as well as adding in a small amount of psychedelic touches.
On this recording Balmog create an 18 minute track that is mostly rooted in a more traditional black metal style as well as adding in some psychedelic and progressive rock touches to create something different. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the conflict between Judeo-Christianity and Islam, and the relationship between the human condition and its confrontation with the divine creation.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Balmog and if you are a fan of black metal with psychedelic and progressive rock elements, you should check out this ep. 8 out of 10.
