Martre are a solo project from Denmark that plays an experimental form of black metal with some elements of grindcore and this is a review of his 2023 album "Ofelia" which will be released in may by These Hands Melt.
Harsh noises start off the album before going into more of a heavier direction while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the riffs also adding in a lot of melody and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast b eats and grindcore elements can be heard.
When tremolo picking is added into the faster riffing they also give the music more of a raw feeling The songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some synths also being added into the background at times which also gives the recording more of an atmospheric touch.
At times the music also gets very experimental sounding along with one of the songs also introducing spoken word samples onto the album. Clear vocals can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and clean playing and acoustic guitars can also be heard on some of the tracks, the closing song is also very long and epic in length. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in a mixture of English and Danish and cover grief, rage and torment themes.
In my opinion Martre are a very great sounding experimental black metal solo project with elements of grindcore and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Armor of Gold" "Voices in The Ashen Winds" and "I dødens have, Pt. IV". 8 out of 10.
