Taiwan's duo Laang has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for a depressive form of post black metal with symphonic touches and this is a review of their 2023 album "Riluo" which will be released in November b y Talheim Records.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Melodies are also added into a lot of the guitar riffing while symphonic sounds and orchestras are also mixed in with the heavier sections of the songs and the vocals are done in an angry black metal style.
Growls can also be heard at times while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. The songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the music also having its depressive and melancholic moments along with one song also introducing clean playing onto the album and Asian folk instruments can also be heard in certain sections of the recording, clear male and female vocals are also added on the closing track.
On this recording Laang takes the modern forms of symphonic, depressive and post black metal and mixes them together to create a very dark and aggressive sounding recording. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Mandarin Chinese and cover a spiritual view of Death with some inspirations from Chinese Taoism and Indian Buddhism as well as the main members own personal and traumatic experiences.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Laang and if you are a fan of symphonic and depressive post black emtal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Liuxe de Taiyang" "Gui Xiang" and "Riluo". 8 out of 10.
