Cenotaphe are a band from France that plays a very raw and atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2018 ep "Empyree" which will be released on February 15th by Nuclear War Now! Productions.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the ep along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams which also capture a depressive edge at times. All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them.
A decent amount of melody is also added into the guitar riffing and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. At times the music gets very atmospheric sounding along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic style and you can also hear a good mixture of both old school and modern influences in the way the songs are composed.
Some of the songs are very long and epic in length along with one track also introducing melodic chants onto the recording. When synths are brought into the music they also give the songs more of an ambient feeling which also brings in a dominant atmosphere on the instrumental and aggressive style shouts are also brought into the music briefly and the album closes with a cover of Aphrodite Child's "End of The World, The production on the recording brings in more of a raw and old school approach while the lyrics are written in French and are inspired by the writings and poetry of Aloysius Bertrand, Theophile Gautier, Charles Bauldelaire, Stephane Mellarme and the paintings of Odilon Redon.
In my opinion Cenetaphe are a very great sounding raw and atmospheric ambient black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Centaures" and "End Of The World". 8 out of 10.
