Crestfallen Dusk are a musical project from Tennessee that plays a southern gothic style of black metal which takes black metal and mixes it with some avant garde touches and elements of Hill Country blues music and this is a review of their self titled 2022 album which will be released in July as a joint effort between Moonlight Cypress Archives, Folkvangr Records and Ixiol Prod..
Blues style riffing starts off the album while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling along with some of the tracks also being very long and epic in length.
Clear vocals can also be heard on some of the tracks while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while keyboards can also be heard in certain sections of the recording.
At times the music also gets avant garde style along with the songs also capturing a southern gothic vibe at times as well as the heavier side of the recoding also showing an influence of the second wave style, when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in more of a blues rock direction. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover American Gothic themes.
In my opinion Crestfallen Dusk are a very great sounding southern gothic black metal musical project and if you are looking for something very original sounding, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Beneath The Cool, Calm Soil" and "My Clouds Have Not A Silver Lining". 8 out of 10.
