Hilning are a solo project from Sweden that plays a very epic form of pagan black metal and this is a review of his 2022 album "Råtijinn" which will be released on June 17th by Suicide Records.
Epic sounding synths start off the album and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats can be heard which also gives the recording more of a r aw feeling and the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody. The music also has its atmospheric moments along with some of the tracks also being very long and epic in length and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style when they are utilized.
Most of the music is also very heavily rooted in the classic Scandinavian style as well as remaining very modern sounding at the same time along with some songs also adding in elements of folk music, one of the later tracks also introduces clean playing onto the recording and as the album progresses a brief use of melodic vocals can also be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in Swedish and cover Paganism and Sorcery themes.
In my opinion Hilning are a very great sounding epic pagan black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Runola" "Blodstein-Lux Regni Rebell" and "Spårlöst Försvunnen". 8 out of 10.
