Dark Goat Interview

Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new ep?

Hello everyone! We will answer in two in this interview, I am Vorigan (V) the guitarist of the band and with me there is Father Faust (F) the singer.

After the recording of "De Nocturnae Profundis" we have published two other tracks included in "Funeral Hymns", these are two songs published separately as they are out of context with De Nocturnae Profundis as they follow a more funeral doom metal style. The band is now completed with the arrival of a bassist and a drummer and we are preparing for the start of a concert tour.

In May you had released a new ep, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

(V): It's the return of Father Faust on vocals, and that's already good news. And then essentially it's a rawer and darker production, a mix of grind, warmetal and black metal. It's probably the heaviest musical production that Dark Goat have ever produced. We wanted to differentiate this EP from the previous ones with a rawer production and a minimalist and at the same time harder approach than in the past.

A lot of your lyrics cover Occultism themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

(F): I Always have been very much in to occult and non "mainstream" spirituality i tend to always seek new inspiration and points of view through what people call "dark arts" as a practitioner of some of them myself and i think a bad with such themes should also look into them.

What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Dark Goat'?

(V): I chose the name when the band was still just an idea and not yet something concrete. I like the idea of the dark goat that represents Baphomet, with all the esoteric suggestions that derive from it. The idea of the medieval goat that presides over the witches' sabbaths and that copulates with them has always fascinated my personal imagination. Not to mention what this symbol has always represented in the dark arts and occultism.

Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new ep cover?

(F): De Nocturnæ de profundis (right pronunciation) is a work that is a look into the representation of blasphemy and darkness of arts the art that i made for this, is a recreation of one such ritual, the covered faces and attire are a eco of old Hidden rituals once common in our regions, before Catholic church called them "blasphemous".

And in the theme of blasphemy we are working on new music, i curated the new artwork (Funeral Hymns) and this one is inspired by the useless oppulance of german saints remains: covered in gold and gems which is a waste that has no purpose other than ego stroking for churches.

Since 2022 you have released a great amount of music, do you spend lot of time writing and creating music?

(V): Yes! I am very creative and I spend a lot of time composing new music, then consider that we have been a duo for a very long time so this made all the composing work easier and faster, we record from home so this affects the prosperity of the recording of EPs, and singles released in the past.

Originally the band started out as a duo but have evolved into a trio, what was the decision behind adding in an additional member?

(V): We added Tony a drummer and Dedalus at bass player quite recently these days, this need arises because we want to get out of our four walls and let our music be heard even by those who don't know us on stage through concerts that we intend to follow in a very theatrical way.

Has the band had any opportunities to do any live shows?

(V): We performed a small live show quite some time ago, but we will soon be performing with the full lineup in live shows in the summer.

Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

(V): We have had several offers in the past but we didn't pursue them because we didn't like the idea of making our music more accessible. We decided to make music precisely because we like to play really heavy and pounding music with blasphemous and occult lyrics, so we will be happy to accept a record deal if it will continue to allow us to play bad music without compromises and in an old school just the way we like it.

On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

(V):  I have to admit that we unexpectedly received great feedback and an increase in sales after "De Nocturnae Profundis". We are happy because it repays our work and our creativity, it means that our musical proposal, although raw and not very accessible, has a certain listening range and we will do everything not to betray our listeners and therefore to continue on this dark road.

When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

(V): Now we are very focused on rehearsals with the new elements that have to learn a part of our repertoire to play live during the summer, as soon as it will be possible we will do a photo shoot to present the whole band before starting the series of concerts that will keep us busy in the next months. After the live shows and with the arrival of autumn we will start working on a new full-length but this will require more time as we are no longer a duo and it will become a longer and slower process than in the past. Surely something will come out soon.

What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are listening to nowadays?

(F): Is personally much in to the band Portal from Australia and both versions of Batushka.

(V): I like Mayhem, Archgoat, Marduk, old Cradle of Filth and old Dimmu Borgir.

Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

(F): our world is full of interesting and occultism you just need new eyes to see it!

(V): Yes, I really hope that Extreme Metal fans appreciate our efforts and continue to listen and support us and that this interview will intrigue new listeners. Thanks for granting us the interview in Occult Black Metal Zine!
