Gurthang are a band from Poland that has been featured before in this zine an plays a mixture of atmospheric black metal and funeral doom with touches of death metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Shattered Echoes" which was released by Cimmerian Shade Recordings.
Tortured voices along with melodic riffing starts off the album along with some grim yet high pitched black metal screams being added onto the recording a few seconds later and the solos and leads also use a great amount of melody and the slower riffing is very heavily influenced by funeral doom metal.
Clean singing can be heard in some parts of the songs and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard and the tracks also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the tremolo picking also gives the music more of a raw feeling and death metal growls can also be heard at times and some tracks also bring in a small amount of synths which also add more atmospheric touches to the recording and a couple of the songs are very long and epic in length.
Gurthang creates a recording that brings in a very aggressive yet atmospheric style of black metal and also mixes in more death metal influences this time around while only having a touch of funeral doom from their previous releases, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover depression, loneliness, death, misanthropy and loss themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Gurthang and if you are a fan of black metal that is very diverse, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Closure" "Paragon Of Virtue" "Rebirth" and "Plyon Of Blaze". 8 out of 10.
