Underdark are a band from The United Kingdom that plays a mixture of post black metal and blackgaze and this is a review of their 2017 ep "Mourning Cloak" which will be released in March by Third I Rex.
Heavy post metal style riffing starts off the ep along with some grim yet high pitched black metal screams a few seconds later and you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard .
During the faster sections of the songs the music brings in more of a raw feeling along with the riffs also using a decent amount of melody and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along while also mixing in some post hardcore and shoegaze elements and acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length and growls are added onto the last track.
Underdark plays a style of post black metal that has its raw moments while also adding in touches of shoegaze and post hardcore to create something very different, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and poetic themes.
In my opinion Underdark are a very great sounding mixture of post black metal and blackgaze and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Span Of Black Nihility". 8 out of 10.
