Grendel/Spirit/Earth And Sky Promotions/2021 CD Review

 

  Grendel  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  Viking  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  folk  music  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Spirit"  which  was  released  by  Earth  And  Sky  Promotions.

 Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while t he  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody. 

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  epic  moments.

  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  some  of  the  music  also  showing  some  influences  of  the  more  melodic  side  of  death  metal.  When  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  also  bring  in  some  elements  of  folk  music  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clean  Viking  vocals  onto  the  album  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  instrumental  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  epic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Grendel  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic  Viking  black  metal  band  with  elements  of  folk  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Mortal  Fight"  "Behind  the  Clouds"  and  "Ashes".  8  out  of  10.
