Hanternoz are a duo from France with some session members that plays a very epic and atmospheric form of pagan black metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Au Fleuve de Loire" which will be released in May by Antiq.
Water sounds and spoken word parts start off the album before going into a more heavier and melodic musical direction. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length and clean pagan vocals can also be heard at times.
Grim yet angry sounding black metal screams are also a very huge part of the recording while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic yet epic style.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with one of the tracks also introducing folk instruments onto the album. At times the music also gets very atmospheric and medieval sounding as well as some percussion's also being added into some parts of the recording, growls and choirs can also be heard briefly and a later song also adds in a small amount of clean playing and as the album progresses a small amount of acoustic guitars can also be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in French and cover Local legends and French Folklore themes.
In my opinion Hanternoz are a very great sounding epic and atmospheric pagan black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Cul De Greve" "VielleNasse Crevee" and "Herons dans ma Memoire". 8/5 out of 10.
