Ancient Mastery/Chapter One: Across The Mountains Of Drämmarskol & Chapter Two: The Resistance/Northern Silence Productions/Double ALbum Review

 

  Ancient  Mastery  are  a  solo  project  from  Austria  that  plays  a  very  epic  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  compilation  album  "Chapter  One:  Across  The Mountains  Of  Drämmarsko l &  Chapter  Two:  The  Resistance"  which  will b e  released  in  December  by  Northern  Silence  Productions  and  consists  of  both  of  his  full lengths.

  Atmospheric  and  epic  sounding  synths  start  off  the  compilation  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  th4e  tremolo  picking  in  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.  Throughout  the  compilation  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of t he  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  songs  also  mixing  in  touches  of  folk  music  at  times.  as  well  as  some  songs  also  adding  in  clean  playing  and  female  vocals,  flutes  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  music  also  gets  very  symphonic  sounding  at  times.

  Influences  of  power  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  more  melodic  style  of  the  songs  as  well  as  the  first  track  on  the  second  chapter  introduces  nature  sounds  into  the  music.  On  the  second  album  the  vocals  also  go  into  more  of  a  grim  black  metal  direction  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  male  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  on  both  recordings  are  concept  albums  based  upon  an  epic  fantasy  story  written  by  the  songwriter.

  In  my  opinion  Ancient  Mastery  are  a  very  great  sounding  epic,  atmospheric  and  melodic  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Majesty  Of  Aztara"  "The  Forest  Gate"  "City  Of  Broken  Dreams"  and  "Eternal  Night". 8/5  out  of  10.
