Sweden's Watain has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of a melodic and occult style of black metal and this is a review of t heir 2022 album "The Agony & Ecstasy Of Watain" which will b e released on April 29th by Nuclear blast Records.
Heavy yet melodic riffing starts off the album while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. The guitar solos and leads also add in a great amount of melody as well as having its chaotic moments and when the music speeds up a lot of blast beats can be heard.
Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the tremolo picking also gives the songs more of a raw feeling when they are utilized. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the music bringing in a more modern touch to a classic Swedish style.
Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with the riffing also mixing in influences from other styles of extreme metal as well as the instrumental also adding in a brief use of keyboards before returning back to a heavier direction on the following songs and as the album progresses a small amount of clean playing, spoken word parts and whispers can also be heard and one song also adds in some clear vocals. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover profound contemplation, manic proselytism, devil worship, occultism, darkness and death themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Watain and if you are a fan of this band, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Howling" "Leper's Grace" "We Remain" and "Septentrion". 8 out of 10.
