The Meads Of Asphodel/Running Out Of Time Doing Nothing/Godreah Records/2019 CD Review

  United  Kingdom's  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  have  returned  with  a  new  album  which  continues  the  experimental  black  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Running  Out  Of  Time  Doing  Nothing"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Godreah  Records.

  A  sci  fi  orientated  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  and  heavy  guitars  being  added  onto  the  recording  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  aggressive  shouts  and  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  some  melodic  vocals  also  being  used  at  times.  The  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  experimental  and  avant  garde  elements  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  music  also  has  its  progressive  and  symphonic  moments  along  with  some  touches  of  psychedelic  rock.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  elements  of  industrial  and  electronic  music  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  later  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  samples  and  female  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  hatred  fore  religion,  conformity  and  control.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "I  Am  Oblivion,  Deep  Drenched  In  Forever"  "I  Stood  Up  Tiptoe,  Reaching  For  Heaven"  "The  Broken  Wings  Of  A  Hud-Hud"  and  "Souvenir  Of  Death".  8  out  of  10.

The Meads Of Asphodel/Rerthro/Imperial East-West Onslaught/Godreah Records/2018 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  the  United  Kingdom's  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  and  China's  Rerthro  called  "Imperial  East-West  Onslaught"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Godreah  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  who  return  with  their  experimental  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  spoken  word  parts  and  epic  sounding  synths  which  also  bring  in  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  film  along  with  some  clean  playing  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  leads  to  a  heavier  direction  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Synths  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  while  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  music  also  getting  very  experimental  and  progressive  sounding  in  some  parts  of  the  songs  as  well  as  some  of  their  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  At  times  the  music  gets  very  symphonic  sounding  while  acoustic  guitars  and  percussion's  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  session work  from  Alan  Davey  of  Hawkwind  and  Mirai  of  Sigh  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  as  well  as  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  used  at  times  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  on  the  bonus  tracks  they  bring  in a  cover  of  Jan  Hammer's  "Crockett  Theme",  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Religion,  Biblical  Apocrypha,  Death  and  War  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  their  side  of  the  split. RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Gods  At  War"  and  "The  Voiceless  Dust  Of  Ages".

  Next  up  is  Rerthro  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  thrash  influenced  sound  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  synths  are  also  used  at  times  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of   melody  and  death  metal  growls  are  also  added  in  some  parts  of  the  music.

  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style  along  with  the  riffing  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  they  close  their  side  of  the  split  with  an  ambient  piece  which  also  adds  in  some  female  vocals,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  evil  themes.


  In  my  opinion  Rerthro  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wyrd"  and  "The  Night  Of  Lost  Soul".

  In  conclusion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  experimental  black  metal  and  blackened  thrash  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Forefather/The Meads Of Asphodel/English Steel/Godreah Records/2017 SPlit CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  United  Kingdom's  Forefather  and  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  called  "English Steel"  which  was  released  by  Godreah  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Forefather  which  continues  the  Anglo  Saxon style  of  pagan  metal  from  previous  releases.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy pagan  sound  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  at e present  on  their  side  of  the  recording  and  after  awhile  grim  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known. 

  Melodic  pagan  vocals  are  added  into  their  songs  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  split  and  traditional  metal  influences  are  also  utilized  at  times  and  as  their  side  of t he  split  progresses  acoustic  guitars  are  also  used  briefly  and  they  also  add  in  a touch  of  folk  music  and when  the  music  finally  speeds  up a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  a  more  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  synths  are  added  onto  the  closing  track  which  is  also  an  instrumental.

  Forefather  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  Anglo  Saxon  style  of  metal  established  on  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anglo  Saxon  History  and  Heritage.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Forefather  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Two  Sacred  Oaks"  and  "In  Victory  We  Feast".

  Next  up  is  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  another  band  that h as  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  experimental  style  of  black  metal  on  this  recording.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  folk  instruments  and  a  medieval  atmosphere  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of g rim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  blast  beats  and  atmospheric  synths a re  also  added  to  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads a re  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them a long  with  operatic  female  vocals  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording,

   After  awhile  the  music  gets  more  experimental  and  acoustic guitars  are  also  used  briefly  while  some  tracks  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  and  clear  male  vocals  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  also  adding  in  Candi,  Stanton,  Sham  69,  The  Saints  and  Desaster  covers  which  also  display  elements  of  punk  rock.

  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  experimental  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Religion,  Bible  Apocrypha,  Death  and  War  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Infidel"  and  "Perfect  Day".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black  and  pagan  metal,  8  out  of  10.

The Meads Of Asphodel/Sonderkommando/Candlelight Records/2013 CD Review

  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  are  a  band  from  the  U.K  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  on  this  recording  I  would  describe  as  being  experimental  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Sonderkommando"  which  was  released  by  Candlelight  Records  during  the  year  of  2013.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  atmospheric,  experimental,  and  avant  garde  sound  to  the  recording  as  will  as  mixing  in  some  flutes,  violins,  and  harmonicas  on  a  couple  of  songs,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars   range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  utilize  some  primitive  elements  while  concentrating  more  on  melody  as  well  as  mixing  in  influences  from  other  genres  of  music,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  full  chords  and  finger  picking  to  enhance  the  experimental  elements  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  range  from  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams,  deep  growls,  clean  singing  male  and  female  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts  along  with  a  brief  use  of  samples,  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  horrors  of  concentration  camp's  during  World  War  II,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  The  Meads  Of  Asphodel  and  if  you  are a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wishing  Well  Of  Bones"  "Children  Of  The  Sunwheel  Banner  Part  2"  "The  Lamenting  Weaver  Of  Horror"  and  "The  Mussulmans  Wander  Through  The  Infernal  Who".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

The Meads Of Asphodel/The Murder Of Jesus The Jew/Candlelight Records/2010 CD Review

  The Meads Of Asphodel are a band from the United Kingdom that have a long history with a musical style that I would describe as Anti Christian experimental black metal and this is a review of their 2010 album "The Murder Of Jesus The Jew" which will be released by Candlelight Records.

Drums alternate between slow, mid paced, to fast drumming with some brutal blast beats and percussion work that brings a very tribal sound to the music, while the keyboards and synths have an orchestrated classical music feel to them as well as an avant garde/experimental feel, as far for the bass playing it has a very strong and powerful tone which is very easy to hear on this recording.

Rhythm guitars are mostly slow, mid paced to fast black metal riffs with a lot of thrash, punk and traditional metal influences that also contain a lot of melody to them, while the lead guitars are very melodic guitar solos that have a very classic metal to them with some slide guitar being used at times which give the music a darker feel, as for the acoustic guitars when they are utilized they bring a classical/folk music feel to the music as well as some influences from progressive music.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some deep growls and clean singing male and female vocals being used at times, while the lyrics touch on Anti Christian and Satanic themes, as for the production it has a very heavy and professional sound to it with all of the musical instruments having a very good sound to them.

In my opinion this is another good album from The Meads of Asphodel and if you where a fan of their previous recordings, you should enjoy this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "My Psychotic Sand Deity" "Dark Gethsenane" "Jew Killer" and "Genesis Of Death". RECOMMENDED BUY.
