Vintras Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

_Vintras is a musical conduit for my misery and depression. An outlet where I can process it, focus it into music and put it to one side for a short while. The devil makes work for idle hands so I make work for myself. _

2.You have your first full length coming out in March, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the  recording?

_It is best described as Black Metal but my intention was to also cultivate the atmosphere of dark 80s New Wave bands - hence the Ultravox cover - which I find have a uniquely cold and bleak atmosphere without being overtly 'heavy' musically. I happened to be listening to a lot of it as I worked on this project. Much of the melody and chord progressions found within that genre lend themselves to Black Metal so it seemed to cross-pollinate. It was never the goal with Vintras to create traditional raw or primal BM but to use the palette that Black Metal affords in terms of tempos, drum beats and vocals as a language and foundation to build upon. We both have considerable experience in creating music through other projects so we wanted the album to sound huge and create a sense of atmosphere and cold distance without losing clarity. _

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

_The lyrics on 'Timescarred' are an exploration of passing time, physical decay, and spiritual decline in the shadow of wavered belief and broken hope. A yearning for elemental truth and the rhythm of a natural tradition and a mourning for the passing of lost power; ancient and profound. Each song is a contemplation of fate and future and a lament of failure and weakness, seen through various masks and reflected upon various selves. Time may heal but it leaves its scars._

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Vintras'?

It is taken from Eugène Vintras; a 19th Century petty criminal turned 'messiah' who said he was visited by angels and claimed to be the reincarnation of Prophet Elijah. He was a con man who founded two cults and adopted the inverted cross as his symbol, dabbling in the occult before being jailed for fraud. To be named for such a man seemed fitting given our worldview and serves as a reminder of the futility of our achievements in life. Supposedly great men are often nothing more than an illusion in the eye of the beholder while the lowest and most base amongst us can be hailed as prophets by the gullible and delusional if the circumstances are right. Ultimately, the search for meaning, power and riches ends in the same grave whether you are a beggar or a messiah.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

_It is a piece called 'The Study of the Pain' by Devinez. It was A.A.L that drew my attention to her work and as soon as I saw it I knew it was an ideal companion piece to the music._

6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

Timescarred, and by extension Vintras, was just the music I wrote over the course of two years that happened to be the darkest of my life. As I decided to take it forward and record it properly I asked A.A.L to be a part of it as he is an exceptional vocalist and lyricist that I trusted could bring something to the music and vision that I simply couldn't do alone. The same goes for the drums; I used a renonwned session musician as I wanted the performance to be at a higher level than I was ever going to be capable of. I'm also not a fan of using programmed drums!_I don't intend for Vintras to be a 'band' per se as the music is a reflection of my own mindset and therefore cannot be written by committee. If we ever perform live I will look into assembling a full lineup but there are no plans for that at the moment._

7.So far very little is known about the band, do you prefer to keep a   lower profile?

_Yes. Despite the music being deeply personal, I don't feel there is anything to be gained from having our 'personality' attached to it. You can only ever be disappointed when you learn more about the artist themselves._

8.The new album is going to be released through both 'War and Void Wanderer Productions', how did you get on contact with these labels?

_I was looking for a specialist BM label to handle the release as it is hard to get a foothold self-releasing with an anonymous project that doesn't play live! Thankfully Void Wanderer liked the music and were happy to work with us, and invited War Productions to be a part of it._

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

_So far not too many have heard of us! But I have been very happy with the positive response to the first preview track 'In Death's Dream' that we released in January._

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

_I am in the process of writing a second Vintras album and it is a refinement of, and hopefully improvement on, what can be heard on 'Timescarred'. I only write for Vintras when I am in the right (wrong?) mindset and this seems to be the sound that comes out. If it doesn't sound like Vintras then it simply won't be considered for this project._

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

_As mentioned previously, the 80s new wave bands are a massive influence (I once jokingly described Vintras as Big Country with blast beats), as well as gothic/doom metal such as early Katatonia/Anathema/My Dying Bride and a range of Black Metal bands. I listen to all of this stuff regularly, plus a tonne of Heavy/Death/Thrash metal and all sorts of old rock & pop from day to day. _

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts

I hope you enjoy the album. If so then please spread the misery!

Niphredil Interview

1.For those that have never heard of us before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

The band was originally founded in 2014 and has been through some stand by periods in the past. I think I can define Niphredil as an expression of some kind of pureness that becomes tangible only through music. The whole intention was to put in a musical language the unexplainable forces from the depths of our beings, using long songs with complex compositions; leaning to both Black and Doom metal, but always trying to insert something different in the music. I find it pretty boring to close one's creativity to just one genre or two, but I can't say that Black and Doom metal are not our main sources of inspiration, as well as being the types of metal that I enjoy playing the most. Also, they're to my opinion the most expressive ones.

2.Recently you have released your first full length, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?

The first EP is a bit darker in my opinion, and to some extent I feel it less personal. Probably one of my objectives with the album was to 'define' our style a little more. As you go through on creating music, or creating anything, you realize that in some way you repeat ideas and patterns. Maybe that's what "style" means. So, I started seeing what kind of ideas could be coming from this style of mine and exploited them, but also trying to use things that I would normally not use. An important new element is the use of clean vocals, which I also plan on expanding on that on the future. As for lyrics, the lyrics on that EP were very Lovecraft inspired, while on the recent album they sprung more from within, so to speak.

3.This was also your first release since 2017, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time span?

Actually our first EP was completed in December of 2014, but thanks to an incompetent Ecuadorian label that was supposed to release it in tape, the 'official' release was delayed and eventually it was only released digitally in 2017 independently (the label didn't do shit btw). And as mentioned earlier, we went through a couple of stand by periods. In 2019 we tried to record an album -using the 2 songs from the EP and 2 from the new album- with a full line up but there were some disagreements with those members and they left. Then, the pandemic striked and the creation and production of the album was delayed. That helped though because I wrote 4 of the 6 songs from the album on that period.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Like I said before, on the EP it was very Lovecraftian. I didn't write about any specific story of his, but I kinda created stories inspired on his work. Now, I focused a lot on the inner world -struggles, ancient spirituality- and on the outside world -nature, outer space and fantastic places-.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Niphredil'?

I was in the creation of the first EP, looking around for names while I was reading Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring. When the fellowship is in Lothlorien, there is this scene where Aragorn is standing among some flowers, one of them being elanor and the other, a white one that resembles stars on the Earth, niphredil. It is written in this part of the book that that was the last time Aragorn was there as a living man. In the Silmarilion, Tolkien writes about how Aragorn's lover ends her life among the niphredil, so she could join him. Now, I'm not a big Tolkien freak, but I do enjoy his work a lot, and all that lore really striked me, so I said ok let's use this name haha. It really appeals to the romantic side of the band's spirit, too (romantic in the 'Sturm Und Drang' kinda way).

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The previous explanation leads us to this answer. As a general idea, I wanted the cover to show some sort of mixture between white flowers and stars. While looking for ideas, I stumbled upon the elderberry flower. This plant grows as a weed in Ecuador, so I thought it was an endemic species haha but anyways it works because they are white and have 5 petals, similar to the 5 pointed stars that we mostly use.

7.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

Yes we are very open to expanding the line up, mainly because we want to play live shows. I also like to work as a band where there is more people to give you input and help with things like production, mixing, etc. as long as the team is good, working as a team is way better. Doing things alone is tiring and slow.

8.The new album was released on 'Prophetical Productions', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

I was introduced to the label thanks to a friend of mine from Portugal who has another label called 'Brutal Cave Productions'. He released a split with a song from other project of mine (Waldeinsamkeit) a few years ago, and he told me about Prophetical Productions. So far, I really enjoy the stuff the label has produced. Like for example, if you like slow and cavernous doom metal, check out Velar, really good stuff.

9.On  a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and doom metal?

I think many of the people that have listened to it have enjoyed it, some more than others. We've received some pretty good comments and reviews as well, and many people in Ecuador are waiting for the physical copies, so they can purchase. I don't know if it's just me, but I think that when you release something you have a lot of expectations haha, but to some extent I can say that I've been pleasantly surprised with the reception.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that both of the band members are a part of?

I (José Miguel) am also part of Helus, an atmospheric doom metal piece from Ecuador. I am performing guitar duties as support for shows, and Lucas (the other guitar player) is more focused on his main project No Epitaph (technical death metal).

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Hard to tell. I really listen to a lot of styles and genres so I don't know where that could lead me, but also I feel that I am very close to the more 'melancholic' types of music. Like, everytime that I try to do something different it always ends up sounding somewhat sad and dark haha so I don't know. Whatever it is, it will be something that I like. I like creating songs, not just "riff salads", that's for sure.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

This one could be really long so I'll try to keep it short, but in general I've been influenced by the classics from plenty of styles, from Heavy and Thrash to Black and Doom Metal, and also lots of Goth/Industrial, Post Punk, etc. It's really a lot of things and I still listen to the old school metal I was listening to at 15 and then can switch to recent findings like Darkwave bands. I think that when you listen to something enough times and enjoy it, it can influence your songwriting the next time you create. Let me give you one example, if you listen to the ambient guitar parts on our song 'Unpredictable', I was trying to recreate that 'chorus' effect that Post Punk guitars have. Also nowadays I am listening to a lot of Nu Metal, ha! Unexpected, I know, but at some point of my growing up process I was listening to a lot of that, and every now and then I come back to it.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or tohughts?

Thanks for featuring us. Be sure to support the label Prophetical Productions by purchasing material from them, independent labels are still a big key for keeping the underground alive and stopping the mainstream from feeding us what the system wants.

Vurdala'ka Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

Vurdala’ka is the child of my love for two very formative genres in my musical trajectory, each coming at a different point in my life. Essentially I wanted to fuse neoclassical darkwave, which I got into around 10 years ago when I was just starting to create consistently, with the whole vampyric/raw black metal thing that came to me later, when I was much more well-versed in dark and extreme music. It’s one of my more well-thought out projects, but I love to revel in the drama and over the top nature of it.

2.So far with this project you have released 3 ep's, musically how do they differ from each other?

I’d say they build off each other, in a way. The first one was very minimal, with a few neoclassical segments and a more primitive, but still goth-y sound, while the second one adds more melody, keyboards and proper orchestrations. The third one, to me, is the logical endpoint for that evolution, as it’s essentially all symphonic and even features a song (Angels of the Night) that’s gothic metal with raw black metal being just the presentation format. Unintentionally, the themes have also become a bit more personal with each release, since the second EP saw me embracing femininity a lot more and the third one included a literal LGGBTQ+ allegory and features clean, female vocals, which is significant to me.

3.Some of your lyrics cover Satanism, Vampirism and Occultism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Ever since I was a child I’ve been interested in demonology, the occult and darkness in general, partly because of my father, who’s a pretty sacrilegious and eclectic christian, but also because in Catalan speaking areas, subjects like the Devil, Death, sex and shit are traditionally a bit less taboo than other places of the christian world, and a certain degree of blasphemy is and was pretty rampant in some places. With that predisposition, I sort of fell into a pipeline that was only made deeper by my interest in gothic related art, subcultures and themes. I’d still call myself a satanist, in a way, but honestly I mostly just care about vibes, aesthetics and ideas in my day to day. I don't really believe in anything.

4.With the new ep you also mentioned an interest in the writings of Goethe, Mary Shelly and Bram Stoker, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in their writings?

Again, it’s all my love for darkness. The Romantic era of art has always been a great inspiration for me, whether it’s musically, aesthetically or thematically. As a teenager I was reading Poe, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and Charles Maturin, to name a few, so when I got a copy of Dracula in Catalan, I had to buy it, same with an edition of Faust with illustrations by Harry Clarke. I need the aesthetic in my life. Honestly, my dream is to look like the kind of woman that would simultaneously allure and terrify a closet bisexual Victorian occultist (regardless of their gender). I’m 100% serious.

5.You also cover ant nazi and nsbm themes, how would you describe your left wing views?

I would describe myself as an anarchist, more specifically ancom I guess, but I’m generally open to other leftist schools of thought, as I think their ideas hold value. My ideal world is self-governed, interconnected small communities that use an assembly model and make use of modern technology and science for the betterment of humanity as a whole, without fully dismissing culture (which is a trap some leftists fall into). I’m also pretty invested in the deconstruction and re-analysis of gender and sexuality, since I have quite a bit of experience with the subject. A lot has changed since the days of Marx and Kropotkin, so we must adapt and grow ideologically to properly keep up.

6.You also do a good amount of solo projects, what is it that you bring into the music of Vurdala'ka that would not fit in with your other projects?

Whenever I start a project is because I want to play a certain genre, or within a common aesthetic. Whatever I enjoy listening to, I want to make. If you look around my projects, while some similarities are bound to occur, especially since many are black metal related, I cover different music styles and subgenres, as well as different aesthetic and artistic choices. To summarize, Vurdala’ka is simply an outlet for my love of raw black metal, neoclassical darkwave and vampiric/dark romantic aesthetics. It’s that simple.

7.I know that the band's name means 'vampire' in Slavic, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?

The gothic element of my music, even from its most primitive start, is inescapable to me. Gothic music means gothic aesthetics, which means gothic literature, which often means vampires and there’s no easier target than slavic regions for the stereotypical vampire aesthetic, since Eastern Europe is a bit of a treasure trove of lore and legends. I could not imagine making a project that mixes my love for all the things I mentioned previously without at least referencing it. If you look at the pseudonym I use on the project, Vrolok Strigoi Drakul von Pokol, it’s just a jumble of random Slavic words I found at the beginning of Dracula. Same with the project itself, with Vurdala’ka coming from Tolstoy’s La Famille du Vourdalak. It’s all references.

8.With all of your projects you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musician's or do you prefer to work solo?

I do prefer to work on my own, since it provides a great deal of creative freedom and the ability to spend as much or as little time as I feel like on each project. However, I do work with other people on occasion since, besides collabs, I play in a post-black band called The Darkness of Mankind and in the symphonic power/melodeath/whatever band Keepers of the Rainbow, as well as having been part of bands before (all ending pretty badly ngl).

9.In the last few years you have released a great amount of material with your projects, do you spend a great amount of time writing and creating music?

I used to work in sudden spurts of a couple days to a week on a release, so I made a decent amount of albums and EPs in a short amount of time, but in the latter half of 2022 I hit a stump due to various personal issues and some projects taking a bit more time than I’m used to, so I haven’t worked on much lately. I am trying to get back into the groove of it though.

10.On a worldwide level, how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

I’m not entirely sure, since there aren’t many reviews around and I don’t have many interactions with fans or other artists (shout out to Lust Hag), but so far I‘ve been pleasantly surprised with how quickly some people came to the project. To be fair, I’m still a really minor artist (all my projects are pretty small), so I think it’s normal to not be talked about much.

11.What is going on with your other musical projects these days?

Currently I’m waiting on the mix of an album from my Elder Scrolls themed war metal project Lord Sithis, on the 27th I’m releasing a 15 min black ambient track with Ísfjall, I’m currently working on a noise album for Phenka and we’re recording the last clean vocals for Keepers of the Rainbow. I also plan to start playing live with Keepers and Lord Sithis, as well as noise shows under my real name, which is Samael Boix. I do plan on working on more things again, but I don’t really know what’s coming yet.

12.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

Honestly, no idea. I’m working on a split at the moment and I have plans for a slightly bigger endeavor, but a full length proper is something that only happens naturally for me. Basically, I stop working on a release when I feel it’s done regardless of length.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

There’s too many to count, since I like way too many things and even more if I get to mix them. For Vurdala’ka I’ll say Adrian Von Ziegler, Nox Arcana, Mutiilation, Striborg, Bauhaus, My Dying Bride, Cradle of Filth, Vampirska, Amargor, early Ulver, Christian Death, HIM and many, many more have been extremely formative when creating and evolving my sound. As for listening, I’ve been really into the more melodic and/or fun side of raw black, especially the whole Grime Stone Records scene, but I’ve also been on and off with war metal, noise, various electronic genres, power metal, extreme metal styles with ‘core influences and Japanese versions of many metal genres.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I’d like to shout out my partner, Eleanor (aka. Lust Hag), Bariann from Fiadh Productions, all the handsome boys from the Barcelona black metal underground that I’ve talked to, anyone who has ever worked (and not gone to shit) with me and anyone who has ever supported me, whether it’s economically, by listening, sharing, interacting with me or just sent encouraging words my way. I wouldn’t be here without them. This scene needs more good people at its forefront
