Izthmi/Leaving This World, Leaving It All Behind/Satanik Royalty Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Izthmi  are  a  band  from  Seattle,  Washington  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Leaving  This  World,  Leaving  It  All  Behind"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Satanik  Royalty  Records.

  An  apocalyptic  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  whispers  and  spoken  word  parts  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while t he  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Vocals  are  mostly high  pitched  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  some  deep  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  also  has  its  progressive  moments  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  in  the  faster  riffing  also  giving  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments,  synths  and  pianos  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  they  also  add  in  a  couple  of  instrumentals  and  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  song.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  mourning  of  the  losses  and  the  celebration  of  hopes  and  victories  that  is  to  come.  

  In  my  opinion this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Izthmi  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Shadows  Of  Our  Disillusionment"  "It's  As  If  It  Where"  and  "Leaving  it  All  Behind".  8  out  of  10.

Izthmi/The Arrows Of Our Ways/Within The Mind Records/2020 Full Length Review

  Izthmi  are  a  band  from  Seattle,  Washington  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  progressive  mixture  of  post  black  and  doom  metal  with  some  elements  of  noise  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "The  Arrows  Of  Our  Ways"which  will  be  released  in  2020  by Within  The  Mind  Records.

  Harsh  noises  start  off  the  album  while  ambient  style  synths  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have    very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  acoustic  guitars  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  progressive  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.  Death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Elements  of  doom  metal can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  riffing  as  well  as  the  sounds  also  adding  in  some  touches  of  post  metal.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  songs  also  having  their  atmospheric  moments.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  as  the  album  progresses  drones  and  synths  are  also  added  onto  the  recording  and  a  couple  of  later  tracks also  introduces  clean  vocals  and  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  album.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  the  journey  of  the  self  and  finding  solace  through  love  in a  time  of  extreme  oppression  and  ecological  detriment.

  In  my  opinion  Izthmi  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  and  progressive mixture  of  post  black  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "To  Traipse  Alone"  "Useless  is  The  Song  Of  Man,  From  Throats  Calloused  By  Nature"  and  "The  Arrows  of  Our  Ways".  8  out  of  10.
