Exmordium Interview

Evan French- Drummer/Lyricist of Exmordium
1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
A: Currently we are on a hiatus. Our guitarist Evan Page is in schooling for chemical engineering, and I was paralyzed from the ribcage down in a construction accident a year ago. In therapy and recovering. We are focusing more on our personal lives now- but still writing and practicing on our own.

2.How would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recordings?
A: The earlier stuff was very much Amon Amarth and Immortal influenced black metal, but we have grown into our own recently with a more technical and progressive black metal, maybe in the vein of Dissection.

3.Some of your lyrics deal with Paganism, Vikings and Philosophy, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics?
A: Very Amon Amarth influenced in the early days lyrically. It seemed as an interesting topic to write about- the Dark ages. And in also using that as a medium to question death and life. Philosophy wise- it's the questions that need asking.

4.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your music?
A:The earlier lyrics were more about Vikings and Paganism out of interest and our roots.
Now they more reflect philosophy, the human condition, and social commentary. I find it necessary to question and try to answer the BIG questions in life- and in how we exist and coexist.

5.I know that the band name is 'Exordium and 'Mord' combiened to mean the Dawn Of Darkness. how does this name fit in with the musical style you play?
A: I feel the name if very liberating in which it's not a defined word, it can mean many things to many people- and in that comes the freedom to be able to breathe and write in any way seen fit. Of course a dark undertone in the music and lyrics that come into play as well.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
A: Many shows to name- just mainly the shows with good bands to play with and hang. Our stage presence is barely contained chaos, very balls to the wall.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
A: None as of now...but sometime

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?
A: Very mixed- our early recordings are shit, but our lives shows show and tell fantastically.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
A:More of everything. You'll see...

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
A:
Influences are scattered but metal wise is Dissection, Autopsy, Tsjuder, Darkthrone, Windir, Monstrosity, Deicide, Inquisition.
Nowadays for me is mainly Jazz- and all those great drummers you know, 60's psychedelic rock, early Death/Black metal, and 60's and 70's folk

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
A: Learning and exploring music and art, collecting music, writing poetry, hiking and traveling. Utilizing life.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Now everything is how it seems

Exmordium/Into The Sepulchral Spectrum/Tridroid Records/2017 EP Re-Issue Review

Exmordium  are  an  international  band  with  members  from  Canada  and  the  United  States  with  Wisconsin   and  Ontario  being  their  home  bases and  they  play  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  ep  "Into  The  Sepulchral  Spectrum"  which  will  be  re-issued  in  July,  2017  by  Tridroid  Records.

Classical  guitars  start  off  the  ep  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into more  of  a  heavier,  darker  yet  melodic  musical  direction  while  the  fast  sections  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  music  a  raw  feeling  along  with  some  black  metal  screams.

A  great  amount  of  death  metal  growls  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  classical  guitars  are  also  mixed  in  on  some  of  the  other  tracks  as  well  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  elements  of  thrash  are  added  on  the  closing  track.

Exmordium  plays  a  musical  style t hat  takes  and  old  school  form  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of t heir  own,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics cover  war,  death,  Paganism,  Vikings,  Anti  Religion  and  philosophy  themes.

In  my  opinion  Exmordium  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Portals  Beyond  The  Imprisonment  Of  Time"  and  "Severing  The  Roots Of  Yggdrasil".  8  out  of  10.
