Drudenfuß Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Drudenfuß is an experimental two-piece project that improvise music, of course, focused on Black Metal. We mostly play a raw/noisy style of the genre, but also, we have experimented into DSBM and ambient sounds.

2.So far you have released a demo and been a part of a few splits, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recordings?

In the beginning, Drudenfuß was created as an experiment, in our first demo we try to
recreate the classic old school black metal sound, that’s the reason why I (Insane Mind) decided to write lyrics against religion and stuff related to the topic, but then I just decide to focus in another kind of topics when I wrote the lyrics. Then, we realized that this experiment went right, in our point of view and due to the positive reactions of close friends to the first demo.
About the style, Drudenfuß is usually catalogued as Raw Black Metal and we still hold in that style, but we’re always seeking to improve our sound, so we remain open the add elements from other genres.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored so far with the music?

How I said in the second question in the beginning I wrote anti-religion lyrics and focus a little bit in sacrifices, rejecting all about christianity and its followers. In the first split, you can appreciate a change in the lyrics, this time focused on murders, suicide and hate to humanity. In consequent releases, you can find lyrics about war, thanatophobia, and lyrics about how humans are a big problem to this world. Currently I get completely focused in lyrics about how the human race destroys this world and how we deserve to suffer for it.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name “Drudenfuß”?

Drudenfuß it’s a word in German which means “Pentagram”, we chose this name because, we
were looking for a different name, an uncommon name for a project, we were just trying to
avoid ourselves from calling as a band that already existed before, and “Drudenfuß” turned out to us as an original alternative.

5.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?

Insane Mind and me have been good friends since before we started to play in Drudenfuß, so it’s always easy to find objectives in common and project them through our stuff when it’s time to compose. At some point were a third member in the band playing the drums, but he didn’t reach to fit in the band’s concept, since the we decided to keep the line-up as a duo.

6.You also have been a part of a good amount of splits, can you tell us a little bit more about the bands or musical projects you have shared these recordings with?

We’ve made splits with very interesting projects through this time. The first one was along with Aggressive Tormentor’s solo project S.V.O.C., mostly to promote both bands. Then we participated into “A Record Full of Corpses” with Die Schwarzen Priester, a German one-man band which plays a very raw form of black metal, combining elements of noisegrind and shoegaze. Then we were invited to the “7 Noisy Dwarfs Compilation”, organized by Lorenzo Magni, owner of the netlabel Skull Dungeon, a huge supporter of Drudenfuß and many others of our projects; it wasn’t a black metal split, was mainly focused on noise styles, and included great exponents of the noisecore scene as Mal Aliento or Nucleus. Later we took part into “Forbidden Rites of Invokation” with Goat Orgy, from Bulgaria, playing an insanely primitive style of black/death metal. Our newest split is “The End Is Near”, with the Brazilian raw black metal project FuneralPhobia.

7.Since 2018 you have released or been a part of 5 releases, do you spend a great amount of time writing and creating music?

The instrumental part of Drudenfuß has always remained simple and sometimes, fully improvised. So, the main part of the process of creation is spent writing the lyrics. Recording new tracks usually doesn’t take much time, it depends of how creative we are at the moment of starting to compose. The main reason why we can’t record the amount of tracks we would want to, are our other responsibilities beyond music.

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

This hard to determine, because most of the people who listen to Drudenfuß are close friends of us. However, the reactions among the ones who listen to the band have been positive and we really appreciate people who like our stuff.

9.When can we expect a full length and, where do you see the project heading into musically during the future?

We must do a hard work if we achieve to release something like a full length. But I can say that certainly a Drudenfuß’s full length it’s gonna be a reality someday, even if we’re still not sure when. Aggressive Tormentor and I have been working on it, but first this project needs to evolve more, it’s important for us to improve the instrumental part and get our ideas clear before starting the recording process. We also need to find the time to dedicate to this band.

To be honest, we don’t have an idea about how Drudenfuß is gonna be in the future. Of course, we want to keep our messy black metal style, but also to evolve to different kinds of sound.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and what are you listening to nowadays?

I’ve been influenced by bands like Immortal and his album Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, I’m mainly big fan of Abbath, this is an important reason I think I would really like to recreate something like that; on lyrics I’m being strongly influenced by Cattle Decapitation, they’re an important band for me and one of my favorites. Nowadays I listen to Black metal, DSBM, Ambient, Depressive Black Metal, Atmospheric Black metal (I have to say that two last sub genres are gonna be important in the future cause I want to make something like that with Drudenfuß), besides I listen to Death and Thrash Metal.

11.How would you describe your views on Satanism and Occultism?

We don’t have any religious inclinations, neither satanic or christian. The thematic focused on satanism and occultism that can be noted mostly on our first recordings was headed more to a figurative way, our intention was to represent rejection to all the forms of oppression that a christian
society institutes in the lives of the people.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We want to say thanks to has supported Drudenfuß through this time, such as Victor “Xinx Asklas” from Entocomophobic Records, Lorenzo Magni from Skull Dungeon and the bands who have worked along with us into split or collaborations. And thanks a lot to your zine, for letting us participate in this interview.

Drudenfuß/Sklave Des Abgrunds/Entocomophobic Records/2019 Demo Review

Drudenfuß  are  a  duo  from  Costa  Rica  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  satanic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  demo  "Sklave  Des  Abgrunds"  which  was  released  by  Entocomophobic  Records.

A  very  distorted  and  ritualistic  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  demo  while  also  introducing  grim  black  metal  screams  onto  the  recording  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  style.  One  of  the  tracks  also  adds  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  all  of  the  riffing  avoiding  any  melody  and  focusing  on  power  chords  as  well  some  acoustic  guitars  also  being  added  on  the  closing  track.

Drudenfuß  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  in  the  90's  demo  tradition.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism  and  Blasphemy  themes.

In  my  opinion  Drudenfuß  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  satanic  black  metal  duo  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Died  For  My  Savior's  Will".  8  out  of  10.
