1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
R: Staota started as a one man BM project. I had riffs and ideas for songs that didn't fit to my band at the time,
so I decided to do a solo project on the side. As I parted ways with the now ex-band I decided to grow the project to a band.
I contacted my friend and partner in crime Tuomion Noita to come and play drums. We started writing & rehearsing
and here we are.
T: I had my own solo project in progress when Riivattu contacted me to do drums
for his solo project and as our visions and lyrical themes collided they naturally grew into one project.
2.Recently you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you have went for on the recording?
R: We went for the traditional Finnish style of BM with a touch of DSBM.
Raw, gloomy and melancholic feeling with some punchy riffs ,sad melodies and tortured screams.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?
R: Misanthropy, nihilism and death. Thoughts from a dark place bled to a paper.
In some twisted way, to me they're an outlet into catharsis through pain and hatred.
T: My lyrical themes and soundscapes near these same areas,
the desolation and emptiness of our mortal shells.
The dark sides of human experience.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name ;Staota'?
R: The idea came to me when I was reading one of Michael W. Fords books about Luciferianism.
It basically means a ritual/mantra/spell utilizing vibrations of sound
focusing energy to achieve desired gnosis or a mental state.
5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?
R: The cover artwork is a photograph by a friend of the band . I think it reflects the atmosphere of our music.
6.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you open to expanding the line up or do you prefer to remain a duo?
T: At some point we had this mutual feeling that this is going to be a live band
and started to think about bass players when the ep was done. After a few conversations
and one rehearsal together we joined our ranks with Rota, the bass player from my other band Acid Sodomy.
7.On the ep you also done a 'Mayhem' cover, what was the decision behind doing your own version of one of their songs?
R: We usually fool around with random songs after our own set in rehearsals.
So we played that song and thought that it would be a nice fit in our set.
We gave the song good old dark throne treatment and stripped it off of the "excess stuff"
and ran with it. We're quite happy with the outcome.
T: Yes, we wanted to do a more of a raw approach to this song and it seemed to work well to both of us after a little dabbling about
and then we just went for it.
8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
R: Yes. We are looking for a label to release the EP and then some. We've had few labels contacting
us with interest. We're currently going through the contacts and we're confident we'll find one for us.
9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?
T: We have gotten good feedback and interest and many have asking when are we making physical copies of Kuoleman Kastama EP.
R: Surprisingly good. Keeping in mind that our debut has been out like 2-3 weeks, it's all positive.
Reviews have been generous to us and we're encouraged by the positive feedback.
10.Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?
R: I'm solely focused on Staota
T: I have my other black metal band, Acid Sodomy and I also play drums in a band called Voodoo Bong.
11.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
R: A full length might take a while. We're in the process of rehearsing with our new bass player and writing
few songs to complete our live set. Then we focus on gigs and work on new material.
Musically i see us continuing this path.
12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
R: I'd say the biggest influences to my writing and sound are Satanic Warmaster and Horna. As for what i'm listening nowdays
kalmankantaja, Sarkrista and traditional celtic stuff.
T: Some bands that have influenced me are Hämys, Mgla, Abyssion, Kalmankantaja, Darkthrone.
Lately I have been listening quite a lot of Mgla, Agalloch and different ambient music tracks.
