Sorrow Plagues/Homecoming/2017 Full Length Review

Sorrow  Plagues  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "Homecoming"  which  will  be  released  in  May.

Clean  post  rock  style  guitars  and  shoegaze  elements  start  off  the  album  and  also  mix  in with  the  heavier   and  melodic  sides  of  the  music  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  using  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  they  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  synths  along  with  all  of  the  instruments  sounding  very  powerful.

Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  bringing in  a  great  amount  of  raw  aggression  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  they  give  the  songs  a  more  progressive  feeling  and  saxophones  are  also  added  onto  the  closing  track.

Sorrow  Plagues  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  while  also  adding  in  elements  of  post  rock  and  shoegaze,  the  production  sounds  very  professional for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  emptiness,  solitude  and  sorrow  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Sorrow  Plagues  and  if  you  are a  fan  of  atmospheric  black   metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Disillusioned"  and  "Relinquish".  8  out  of  10.

Sorrow Plagues/Self Titled/2016 Full Length Review

Sorrow  Plagues  are  a  solo  project  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a review  of  his  self  released  and  self  titled  2016  album.

A  very  fast,  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  epic  synths  before  adding  in  grim  screams  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  faster  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  while  the  solos  and  leads  have  a  progressive  feeling  to  them.

Some  of  the  leads  also  bring  in  elements  of  melodic  post  metal  and  shoegaze  while  some  of  the  synths  mix  in  elements  of  ambient  and  the  music  also  brings  in a  lot  of  atmosphere  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  synths  start  getting  more  diverse  bringing  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.

Sorrow  Plagues  creates  another  black  metal  album  that  is  very  atmospheric  and  melodic  while  also  having  its  raw  moments  and  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  shoegaze  and  post  rock  without  losing  any  aggression,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  emptiness,  solitude  and  sorrow  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  very  great  sounding  recording  from  Sorrow  Plagues  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Aspirations"  and  "Surrender".  8  out  of  10.

Sorrow Plagues Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Sorrow plagues is a one man project by me, David Lovejoy. Started up around August 2014 with my first EP "it will never end". I recently just released my latest EP "An Eternity of Solitude"

2.So far you have released 2 EPs and a single, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on those recordings?

I'd say the production is quite raw, with a harsh, depressive atmosphere, but the melodies are very soothing.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your music?

I don't like to reveal my lyrics, however the topics I talk about are loneliness, depression, philosophy and anything that's important to me I guess.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Sorrow Plagues'?

It's actually just the title of a song by a band I listen to called Devil Sold His Soul. Thought the title would sound quite fitting to the music I was making.

5.With this musical project you play all of the instruments and do the vocals, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to remain solo?

I will remain solo, that way I can do exactly what I want, however I do intend to do some shows at some point so I would have to get some session players.

6.Have you ever worked with any full bands before in the past?

I've been in bands all my musical life. I'm currently in a hardcore/post-rock band called Callista. I'm filling in on guitar for a couple of metal bands too.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

I've recieved a bit of interest from some independent labels. I'm working with no sleep till meggido records to produce physical copies. A friend of mine has a label called Infectious sounds and he's digitally distributing my music.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

Yeah, black metal fans from all around the world seem to really enjoy my music.

9.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?

Possibly for my next release, but time will tell. Took me a couple months to write the latest EP and I have a feeling it will take even longer for my next release due to my other musical projects.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I'd say the biggest influence for me when it comes to the black metal side of my music would be Woods of Desolation, especially thew earlier stuff. absolutely love that project. The rest of my inspiration comes from the wide array of music I listen to. I'm pretty big on tech metal at the moment.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

I watch quite a bit of pro wrestling in my free time, I've given it a go too haha

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I don't really have anything to say but I'd like to thank you for your kind words on my latest release.

Sorrow Plagues/An Eternity Of Solitude/2015 EP Review

Sorrow  Plaques  are  a  solo  project  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2015  ep  "An  Eternity  Of  Solitude".

A very  dark,  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths  and  a  few  seconds  alter  the  music  speeds up  and  adds  in  high  pitched  screams  and  blast  beats  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  post  rock  and  shoegaze  in  some  parts  of  the songs.

The  synths  on the  recording  have  a  very  dominant  sound  throughout  the  recording  while  the  music  still  retains  a  raw  black  metal  style  and  when solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they are  very  dark  and  melodic  sounding  and  also  add  elements  of  post  black  metal  into  the  songs  and  there  are  also  a  couple  of  instrumental  tracks  present  on  the  ep  while  most  of  the  songs  still  use  a  great  amount  of  vocals  and  noise  soundcapes  and  clean  playing  can  also be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

Sorrow  Plagues  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  modern  and  atmospheric  sounding  and also  mixes  in  a  decent  amount of  post  rock,  shoegaze,  ambient  and  noise  elements  to  add  more  creativity  to  the  songs,  the  production  sounds  very dark,  heavy  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  emptiness,  solitude  and  sorrow.

In  my  opinion  Sorrow  Plagues  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  black  metal  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Corroding  Soul"  and  "Acceptance".  8  out  of  10.
