Shining/The Helsinki Tapes/The Sinister Initiative/2024 Compilation Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  compilation  from  Sweden's  Shining  which  consists  of  unreleased demo material  which  was  recorded  more  then  20  years  ago which  showed  the  music  going  for  a  raw,  experimental  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  and  the  album  is  called  "The  Helsinki  Tapes"  and  was  released  by  The  Sinister  Initiative.

  A  very  fast  and  raw  sound  starts  off  the  compilation  along  with  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  angry  shouts  and  grim  depressive  black  metal  screams.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  clean  playing  is  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks.

  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  experimental  moments  as  well  as  some  of  the  slower  riffing  also  bringing  in  elements  of  doom  metal,  female  vocals,  spoken  words,  stringed  instruments  and  keyboards  are  also  utilized  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  Swedish  and  cover  Suicide,  Depression  and  Negativity  themes.   

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Shining  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Ghastly  Silence"  and  "For  The  God  Below".  8  out  of  10.

Shining/Feberdrömmar (Del Ett)/The Sinister Initiative/2024 Album Re-Issue Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  an  older  recording  from  Sweden's  Shining  which  showed  the  music  going  for  a  depressive  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  and  the  album  was  originally  released  in  2013  and  called  "Feberdrömmar  (Del  Ett)"  which  will  be  re-issued  in  November,  2024  by  the  Sinister  Initiative.

  Synths  start  off  the  album  which  also  adds  in  an  experimental  touch  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  \yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  melancholic  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  synths  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  slower  parts  of  the  album  also  bring  in  elements  of  doom  metal.

  Some  of  the  harsh  vocals  also  add  in  more  of  a  grim  approach  along  with  the  album  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling,  some  of  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts. 

 There  is  also  some  session  work  from  members  of  Skitliv,  Alfahanne,  Mayhem,  Peste  Noire  and  Trelldom  and  clean  playing  can  also  heard  on  a  couple  of  songs,  one  song  also  introduces  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  suicide,  depression,  negativity  and  misanthropy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Shining  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Terres  des  anonymes"  and  "Black  Industrial  Misery".  8  out  of  10.

Shining/Self Titled/Napalm Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Sweden's  Shining  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  depressive  black  and  doom  metal  with  some  elements  of  progressive  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2023  album  which  will b e  released  in  September  by  Napalm  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  wile  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also b e  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  angry  yet  depressive  sounding  black  emtal  screams.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  clean  playing  is  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clear  vocals.

  Touches  of  progressive  rock  can  also be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling  as  well  as  one  song  also  introducing  keyboards  onto  the  album  which  also  shows  some  influences  of  jazz  and  classical  music  and  they  also  bring  in an  Erik  Satie  cover.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  self  destruction,  suicide  and  violence  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Shining  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Snart  är  dom alla  borta"  and  "Den  permanenta  sömnen  kallar".  8  out  of  10.

Shining/VI/Klagopsalmer/Osmose Productions/Season Of Mist Records/2010 CD Review

  Shining are a band from Sweden that has a long history and are also one of the pioneering bands in Suicidal Black Metal and this is a review of their album "VI KLagopsalmer" which was released by Osmose Productions in 2009 in Europe and in the U.S 2010 by Season Of Mist.

Drums alternate between slow, mid paced to fast drumming with some brutal blast beats, while the keyboards have a very weird dark suicidal edge to them when used, as for the bass playing it sounds very dark and follows the riffs that are coming out of the guitars, in addition there are also some cellos and other assorted instruments that bring a very psychotic avant garde sound to the music.

Rhythm guitars alternate between slow, mid paced to fast black metal riffing that also has a good amount of doom metal and some thrash influences, while the lead guitars are very skillful and melodic sounding guitar solos that are very doomy at times, as for the acoustic guitars they bring a soft feel to the music with their use of finger picking and full chords mixed in with a small amount of guitar slides.

Vocals are mostly high pitched suicidal black metal screams and cries with some clean singing being thrown in at times, while the lyrics are written in Swedish and are very depressive and suicidal, as for the production on this recording which was recorded at The Slaughterhouse between April and August 2008 sounds very professional and you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.

In my opinion this is another good album from Shining, while some of the more elite fans might be disappointed those that appreciate their recent material should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Fullstandigt Javla Dod Inuti" and "Total Utrrysning". RECOMMENDED BUY.
