Valdur/Guilded Abyss/Bloody Mountain Records/2025 Full length Review

Mammoth  Lake's   Valdur  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  a  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Guilded  Abyss"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Bloody  Mountain  Records.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  some  evil  sounding  melodies  at  times.  Vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

When  tremolo  picking  is  added  into  the  faster  riffing  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  add  in  more  of  an  old  school  death  metal  style along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  dissonant  sounding  and  a  later  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  radio  samples  and  some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  sound  effects  and  dark  soundscapes,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  harsh  noises.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Darkness  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Valdur  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hailing  Molten  Meteors"  "Guilded  Abyss"  and  "Stars  of  Belial".  8  out  of  10.

Nattfly/Flocken/Kvlt und Kaos Productions/2025 Full Length Review

Nattfly  are  a  solo  project  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  violin  orientated  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2025  album  "Flocken"  which  was  released  by  Kvlt  und  Kaos  Productions,

Distorted  sounding  electric  violins  start  of  the  album  while  also  capturing  the  heaviness  of  an  electric  guitar.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  some  melodies  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  blast b eats  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  recording.

A  lot  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  second  wave  Scandinavian  tradition  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  dissonant  sounding  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Electric  violin  leads  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  the  album  also  has  its  ritualistic  moments  and  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  a  more  classical  music  orientated  violin  style. The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  animistic  beliefs  and  spiritual  struggles.

Sigilo Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solos project?

This project was a much-needed refresh for my creative journey. After over a decade of composing Black Metal, I often felt that something was missing. Eventually, I discovered a new sense of clarity and purpose—and from that, Sigilo was born. With a more mature and professional approach, the results speak for themselves. This project stands as proof that with dedication and hard work, we can truly achieve something meaningful.

2.Recently you where a part of  a split, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

My musical style is in constant evolution, guided by a single principle: music should be simple, yet mesmerizing. It must carry its own uniqueness, but above all, it has to be a Song—it needs to make sense and resonate with the soul.

3.You started the project in 2019 but waited until 2025 to release any music, can you tell us a little bit more about the long wait?

I started composing for Sigilo as soon as the project was born. The creative process took around one to two years, as I was exploring the right direction for each song. I ended up writing about 14 tracks during that time. With a clear goal in mind—to deliver a result worthy of a major label—I began saving funds to invest in professional mixing and mastering.

While doing that, I also started recording everything myself at home, carefully following the guidance I received from Guilhermino (Blind & Lost Studios). This process continued until early 2023, by which point I had eight tracks fully mixed, mastered, and ready to go.

I began sending the songs out to labels, but there was one in particular I had my heart set on: Alma Mater Records. By chance, I met Fernando Ribeiro in person and told him about Sigilo. He asked me to send him the tracks—and the rest, as they say, is history.

We discussed the idea of releasing a full album, but ultimately agreed it made more sense to begin with a split release. It was a great opportunity to build a bridge between Portugal and Brazil. So we got to work, found the ideal band to join the split (Luxúria de Lillith), and now here we are—at the release of Sermão, July 2025.

4.A lot of your lyrics cover Occultism themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Occultism has been a constant presence in my lyrics throughout this decade-long journey. To me, it feels natural—almost automatic—as if my hands are merely vessels for the messages they carve. I despise the weight religion imposes on our lives, and as the track 'Universal Gathering Chantic' declares: by destroying religion, we pave the way to a better world.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Sigilo'?

In Portuguese, Sigilo holds a double meaning: it is both a closely guarded secret and a magical sigil used in witchcraft or demonic rites. And that duality fits perfectly. This is a ‘secret’ that channeled the music’s energy through me—like a sigil would. It became my conduit, and I became its vessel.

6.With this project you record everything by yourself but have experience working with other musicians in previous bands, you you prefer to work solo?

There are pros and cons to every way of working. When I weigh them, I prefer to work alone. But of course, I have to be prepared for the disadvantages that come with it—like not having a second opinion when I need one. One way I’ve worked around this is by collaborating with Guilhermino and Blind and Lost Studios, relying on his seasoned insight for matters beyond my full grasp.

7.Recently you where a part of a split with 'Luxuria de Lillith', what are your thoughts on the other project that was a part of the split?

Luxúria de Lillith is living proof of how far sheer will and unwavering vision can take a one-man Black Metal project. Alysson has endured where many fall apart. I can only hope to carve out a legacy with the same relentless force—and to keep watching him tear through the scene, doing what he does with brutal precision.

8.The split was released through 'Alma Mater Records', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

From the moment Alma Mater Records was born, it had my attention. I’ve carried the quiet dream of one day joining its ranks. In Portugal, no band stands taller than Moonspell—none have achieved what they have. So to be welcomed by Fernando Ribeiro isn’t just an honor; it’s a milestone that echoes deeply over here.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

I’ve crafted my music to resonate with true Black Metal fans, but also to reach beyond—to draw in Metalheads of all kinds, and maybe even listeners from outside the genre. My goal was clear: to win over new ears without ever betraying the essence that diehard Black Metal fans expect.

10.Currently you are working on a full length, what can we expect musically once it is released?

Gloria Ad Inferi will be a significant release—an evolution of the path I began on Sermão. It draws listeners into haunting soundscapes, steeped in darkness and crafted to echo within the deepest parts of the soul.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

With all due respect to the pioneers who forged Black Metal into what it is, my sound draws strongest influence from five key bands: Behemoth, Satyricon, Immortal, Lifelover, and Inquisition. But when I’m creating, I shut everything else out. I don’t listen to other bands—I need to stay loyal to my own voice, untainted and pure.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Endless thanks to everyone who took the time to listen to my music. And if you haven’t yet—what are you waiting for? My Black Metal project Sigilo is carved from the underground and deserves your ears. Support the underground—it lives and breathes through you!

Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  clear  singing  is  also  utilized  in  certain  sections  of  the  album  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  bringing  in  a  more  chaotic  style.

On  this  recording  Tenebrae  In  Perpetuum  goes  for  a  very  aggressive,  traditional  and  modern  form  of  black  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Italian  and  cover    existence,  time  and  the  inevitability  of  the  end.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Tenebrae  In  Perpetuum  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  and  dissonant  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Carmen  ad  Noctem"  "Inverno,  e  stato"  and  "Vacuum  Coeli".  8  out  of  10.

Solfatare Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Hi, we are Solfatare, a Belgian Black Metal band emerging from Brussels. Our music draws from the roots of traditional Black Metal while embracing a more avant-garde touch, weaving dissonance, glorious melodies, and visceral riffs into an unrelenting journey toward the heights of despair. Blending ferocious aggression with haunting atmospheres, Solfatare delivers gritty introspection and offers a personal reflection on existence.

2.In May you have your first full length coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous demo?

The album is in direct continuity of the demo but with greater artistic maturity, complexity, and refinement.

3.This is also your first release since 2019 can you tell us a little bit more about the 6 year wait in between releases/

The finest endeavors are those shaped in the shadows, like an assassin sharpening his blade, ready to strike at any moment. This album is the result of years spent sculpting sound with intention and heart. We followed inspiration wherever it led us, even if it meant tearing pages from our own book and starting again from scratch. Starting over became part of the process and a habit to support. Each riffs were shaped with care. A slow-burning creation that drew the full spirit and devotion of every band member.

4.A lot of your lyrics cover existential themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?

It is not just a topic that we wanted to approach, it is a real scourge. The absurd nature of existence is an obsession for us. Born from sleepless night and animated by a dizzying lucidity, Solfatare saw the day of light as a vessel of self-expression. Writing is a cathartic experience with the singular strength of transcend anguish itself, wielding its own dark force to rise above it. Sublime switch where the very essence of the negative becomes a path to light.

Trapped between the search for meaning and the unreasonable silence of the universe, we stand as philosophers of the apocalypse, with nothing to offer. Merely conductors of a rusty brass ensemble, an atonal string section, a timpani roll heralding the storm. Emptiness flows through us, conducting a symphony for onychophages, ad nauseam.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Solfatare'?

The band draws its name from a sulfurous volcanic vapor, thick, choking, and steeped in myth. The root of this word lies in a dormant volcano nestled within Italy’s Phlegraean Fields, a place the ancient Romans once imagined as a gateway to the underworld. Long silent, the region has recently stirred, its uneasy rumblings and recent volcanic activity has captured the attention of the scientific community. Should it awaken in full, its fury could cast a shadow over all of Europe, plunging the continent into a shroud of ash and ruin.

But more than just an interesting volcanic feature, for us it also perfectly embodies the internal turmoil within our minds, churning, boiling, fuming, poised to erupt at any moment.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Everywhere you look, people are rushing toward petty goals in a frantic performance. Desires clash and spiral; countless hands stretch out, blindly grasping for something, anything, that might bring meaning. But answers remain out of reach.

This is what the album cover portrays. A humanity in suffering, reaching out toward a flicker of hope. It reflects the central theme of the record: that we are enslaved by our relentless need to hope, despite what we know, against what we know, even when it leads us nowhere.

The artwork is a fragment from a painting by Jean Delville, a Belgian symbolist from the early 20th century. I (T.S.G.H. speaking) first encountered Delville’s work while studying at university. One of his pieces, depicting Prometheus gifting humanity with fire and knowledge, hung in the library and always left a mark on me. When we began searching for an image to embody the spirit of this album, we revisited Delville’s works and came upon the one we are using now.

7.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

We didn’t performed any live show yet. We are currently working on bringing the new album live on stage.

But some Solfatare’s members have stage experiences and are actively playing or have played with other bands.

T.S.G.H. is currently live guitarist for the band “Herzog” who has recently released a first album “Furnace” under the banner of Amor Fati Production.

T.G.T.H. played drum for “Oath Okrana”, another Brussels based Black Metal band.

Don’t miss the opportunity to check on those bands.

8.So far very little is known about the band, do you prefer to keep a lower profile?

Yes, we are not seeking stardom. Our music is a humble expression of ourselves. The future will tell where the wind carries our fumes and where the ashes of our first eruption will settle.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

So far reactions have been quite positive to the 2 tracks premiered. But the album is still yet to be release in its entirety. We will see after the 2th of May.

Interestingly, concomitant to the announce of our release and the first track being premiered, the volcanic activity of the Phlegraean fields increased, forcing the neighboring cities to be evacuated. Knowing that the last major eruption in this area is hypothetically linked to the extinction of Neanderthal and the onset of an ice age, that would do an interesting album release promotion with worldwide impact. Brace yourself for 2th of May.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Nothing is certain, only death is true in this fleeting world. For sure we would like to hit the stage to present the album live.  Also, this will not be our last creation and more can be expected. But our peculiar brew need time to ferment in the fuming caldera left by our first eruption.

Creativity is flowing like churning magma but we are convinced of the importance of self-restrain in order to release something truly inspired, that we would think is worth to reveal to the face of the world. Patience is the mother of all virtues.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I think our influence are quite various, it is difficult for us and we don’t want to play the game to pin-point just a few bands. That being said I think we drew influences from the Icelandic and French scenes as we grew up musically listening to them and share some common features in terms of duality between dissonance and melody.

Regarding what we are listening nowadays that can be quite eclectic and not only metal restricted.

(T.S.G.H. speaking) Not a day goes by without me listening to Emptiness albums « Vide » or « Not for Music », those albums really got me hooked. Not sure if I am doing myself a favor by doing so though. Also, I recently discovered bands like Forsmán or Ferriterium and have been playing their respective albums “Dönsum í logans ljóma” and “Calvaire” on repeat.

T.G.T.H. is diving back into and reexploring the discography of Manilla Road classics. Also lately, he's been stuck in a death metal phase.

N.C.P.M. unwinds and let her thoughts wander while listening to Blut Aus Nord - “Hallucinogen”, the latest Chapel of disease’s albums, or any Wardruna or Drudkh releases. When she needs more energy, she turns herself to Misþyrming, Vonlaus or Vortex of End.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

First of all, thank you for taking the time to conduct this interview and for your interest in our work.

Let’s conclude this conversation with a quote from Cioran that summarize well our state of mind: “In a world without melancholy, nightingales would start burping”

Best regards

Solfatare

Patristic Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

I've been putting music together since late 2018, it all became Patristic in 2020. The world stopped around me, so I could take a good look at the music I've written, and trust myself enough to say "I have a new project". Jacopo from Bedsore helped with vocals and that's how the "Apologetica" EP came out. Then he called himself out being too busy with his work and Bedsore. I had to find new people, and almost by mistake met Sathrath. He learned all the EP songs in a blink of an eye and I couldn't believe how tight he was. For the first time I thought, Patristic could have a real lineup. Plus, some of his musical ideas turned into new songs. That's how "Catechesis" came out. Then I met L.S. when we shared the stage in Germany (me with HD, him with Liber Nvll), loved his vocal style and asked him to be part of the new album. It took forever, but here we are.

2.You have your first full length coming out in June, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?

Like night and day. There are real musicians behind it, a drummer especially, the approach is less frantic, less notes but hopefully the right ones. Everything is more cinematic, there's no urge to fill every second with a thousand notes or transients. We're starting to develop our own style.

3.A lot of your lyrics cover Paganism, Gnosticism and the work of the early Christian writers, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

It's more an historical interest. And a philosophical one. I've always been fascinated by those rarefied centuries of Roman empire decadence. What happened during those 300 years of sleep, when, quoting Excalibur's Merlin, "the one god came to drive out the many"? How was the religious warfield prepared? It started with philosophy. Pagan thinkers were plagiarized then replaced. The apogee of civilization was stripped of its pagan culture, melted and poured on the cross.

4.I know that the band was named after the study of the early Christian writers, what are some of the early church philosophers that you have studied?

I started with St Agostino during my school years, long long time ago. Then others came, Ippolito, Filone, Atanasio... all parts of the same - I apologize for the childish term- "plot". The Christian plot, crafted in Greek language and wrapped in the purple of late imperial clothes. What a glorious mystification.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The Tauroctony is a very popular image of the Mithraic cult -the religion that ended being one of the many embryos of the cult of Christ. I knew Manuel Scapinello would, through his low relief art, turn this classic image and silhouette into something that would fit perfectly the mythological breath of the age we (tried to) give music to.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We have never played live.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

If there will be interest, we'd love to.

8.The new album is going to be released on 'Willowtip Records', how would you compare working with this label to 'Pulverised Records' which released the previous ep?

Roy and Pulverised were great to us, they gave us a chance we'll always be grateful for. We hope with WIllowtip to reach a broader audience, their core is death metal but this is not totally unrelated to our music.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

Still too soon to say. My only hope is that people would get at least to half of one of our songs before starting spitting comments and reviews. This should be done with all music: listen before criticize, the musician deserves at least ten minutes of your precious time.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

Sathrath is busy touring with Infernal Angels and has a tighter and tighter schedule with Nocturnal Depression, L.S. is quite busy being a dad now, and I guess soon he'll have more duties with Frostmoon and Liber Nvll. Let's see if we'll be able to get onstage at least once before the end of the year.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Only one possible answer: into our own identity. "Catechesis" is, still, the beginning of our journey. Some things worked out better than others, that's where I'll start when it's time to write new music. In fact, I'm already working on it.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I'm literally consuming the latest albums by Barshasketh, Thy Darkened Shade, Dormant Ordeal, Blaze of Perdition and Chaos Invocation. These are my primary sources of inspiration these days and I'm thankful for their music.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for taking the time to ask these questions. To the reader, thank you for taking the time to read.
